In a two-day sweep of the Wesleyan University Invitational this weekend, the Judges proved that swimming can be as much a team sport as an individual one. While Justin Wellins '10, James Liu '10 and Hal Grossman '08 all won individual events for the men's swimming team and Charlotte Rea '08 and Hollis Viray '10 garnered first-place finishes for the women's team, the Judges won the meet despite not claiming first in any other individual events.

"The overriding factor in the meet is that we won by depth," coach James Zotz said.

The Judges finished third at this meet last year.

After ending Saturday in third place, the men's team returned rejuvenated Sunday to finish with 1,100 points over the two days and outlast host Wesleyan University, Keene State College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Wellins led the squad by sweeping all three backstroke events, including the 50-, 100- and 200-yard races with times of 27.67 seconds, 57.12 and two minutes, 7.81 seconds, respectively. Liu, another standout rookie, won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.16 seconds. He also placed second in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles.

"We're very lucky to have the [rookie] class progress the way that they have," Goldman said.

Hal Grossman '08 was the only other member of the men's team to place first in an event, winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.35.

In addition to joining forces with Liu, Wellins and captain Matt Lerman '07 for a second-place win in both the 200- and 400-yard medley relays, Grossman also placed third in the 100- and 500-yard freestyle events.

Much like the men's team, the women's team didn't win many individual events, but scored points with high finishes in multiple races.

Still undefeated on the season, Rea swept the one- and three-meter diving events with respective scores of 222.98 and 207.90. The women's team took 100 out of a possible 177 points in diving.

"[Rea] is like a rock," Goldman said.

"Her scores keep improving."

The only swimmer to win an individual event for the women's team was Viray, who won the 100-yard breaststroke race with a time of 1:12.48.

The Judges hit the water again at Tufts University Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
