Low ticket sales postpone Union's Brookline shuttle
Last Saturday's scheduled trial run for a shuttle to Brookline was postponed until next semester because of low ticket sales, an administrator said. The Student Union sold $1 tickets last week for the one-way Crystal Transport shuttle, which will run from the front of Spingold Theater to the intersection of Beacon Street and Harvard Street in Brookline, where students can take the Green Line into Boston.
Of the 645 students who responded to an online Student Union survey, 253 said, if available, they would take the shuttle to Brookline every week, while 230 said they would use it every other week.
Senator for the Class of 2008 Michael Goldman, who spearheaded the initiative, said low ticket sales could be attributed to the tendency of students not to plan ahead.
"We feel that next semester, we're going to try to factor into our system that fact that students tend to be spontaneous and tend to make weekend plans at the last minute and this system didn't really count for that enough," Goldman said.
He added that many students may have been busy last weekend studying for final exams, which begin Dec. 8.
Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan said the trial run next semester will play an integral part in determining whether or not the shuttle becomes permanent.
"If we don't sell any tickets and there's like two people on the bus, then it's not being used by the community," Callahan said. "But if the survey that [Goldman] did parallels the use factor, then it will be well-received and we'll continue it."
Goldman said the Union chose to sell tickets beforehand in order to avoid chaos and make sure people would use the new service.
Students have long complained about the inaccessibility of Brookline, which includes a stop on the Green Line and many kosher restaurants, Goldman said.
