The women's soccer team didn't win Saturday, but after holding one of the nation's top teams scoreless for 110 minutes, players said they had reason to be satisfied.Despite being outshot 21-6, including 10-1 in the second half, Brandeis battled host University of Rochester, ranked No. 9 in the country, to a scoreless tie game.

Following a 3-1 loss to Tufts University Wednesday and a 1-1 tie against Case Western Reserve University Oct. 1, the Judges are 6-3-2 on the season, but still winless in UAA play (0-0-2).

"We sent a message [Saturday]," goalie Betsey Medow '08 said.

"After we lost to Case, a lot of UAA teams looked down on us, but we showed that we're a good, solid team."

Assistant coach Ryan Angel added: "We gave a great performance against one of the nation's top teams."

The Yellow Jackets tested the Brandeis defense early and often. In the game's first minute, senior midfielder Mary Walsh, the reigning UAA player of the year, had a chance to give Rochester an early lead, but Medow deflected her shot wide.

The Yellow Jackets had six corner kicks in the first 27 minutes, but the Judges defense held firm.

Both teams had golden opportunities to take the lead late in the first half.

In the 41st minute, Rochester junior midfielder Darby Grant shot the ball past Medow, but the ball deflected off the post.

A minute later, Judges' forward Lisa Kaplin '07 had a breakaway opportunity, but Rochester senior goalie Molly Leitch made a diving save.

The Yellow Jackets came out even more aggressively in the second half.

In the 58th minute, Walsh's shot got behind Medow, but defender Christine Fulton '07 was waiting at the goal line to boot the ball away.

"The rebound came off, and I happened to be in a good spot, so I took one touch and kicked it as far away as I could," Fulton said.

Rochester saw its best scoring opportunity in the opening minutes of overtime.

Medow seemed to corral the ball in her hands, but the Yellow Jackets knocked it out into the top right corner of the net for what seemed to be the game-winning goal.

But as the Rochester players were prematurely celebrating, the officials disallowed the score, calling a foul on the Yellow Jackets for knocking the ball away from Medow after she had control.

Brandeis then added a fifth defender to preserve the tie.

On Wednesday, the Judges fell 3-1 at home to Tufts despite outshooting the Jumbos 13-10. The Jumbos capitalized on Judges' defensive breakdowns in all three of their goals, all of which occurred well inside the 18-yard box.

"Even though [Tufts] won that game, they weren't the better team," defender Brittany Douglass '07 said.

"We just came out flat in the second half."

After Brandeis tied the game 1-1 on a header by Sarah Jasak '08 in the 17th minute, the Jumbos retook the lead in the 24th minute.

After the Judges failed to clear the ball, senior midfielder Kim Harrington fed junior forward Lauren Fedore, who tipped the ball just over Medow's head and into the back of the net.

Fedore added an insurance goal on a soft header in the 65th minute to provide the winning margin.

The Judges host conference foes Carnegie Mellon University Friday at 5 p.m. and Emory University Sunday at 11 a.m.
