"It starts out real soft," Mat Goldblatt '07 says, sharing his Ultimate Frisbee team's mantra, which the team chants repeatedly during games."Lay it out, lay it out, lay it out," he continues. "If you can't lay it out, do what you can, but you better have that goddamned disc in your hand."

The spiritual leader of Tron, the University's men's Ultimate Frisbee club, Goldblatt approaches his game with fastidious detail. As it turns out, his sense of style is equally meticulous.

"When I first met [Goldblatt], he had a dozen different hats," friend Joel Favazza '07 says. "I thought to myself, 'that kid is surprisingly fashionable.'"

Goldblatt's simultaneous passion for Ultimate Frisbee and stylish apparel makes him the perfect man to operate Breakmark, an apparel company specializing in comfortable and affordable exercise clothing for Ultimate Frisbee enthusiasts, a market Goldblatt says mainstream companies have overlooked.

"Nike, Adidas, all these companies make all these products specifically for certain sports, like for soccer, or basketball," he laments. "But no one makes any quality Ultimate Frisbee gear."

And like many Frisbee players, Goldblatt's teammates were struggling to find quality apparel for the sport.

"None of the guys on the team had any quality exercise clothing dedicated to Ultimate Frisbee," he says. "I wanted to be proud to wear something that showed I played Ultimate Frisbee."

But looking online, he says, "Nothing appealed to me. So I made something that appealed to me."

And that's how Breakmark (www.breakmark.com) was born. Goldblatt buys his supplies from several clothing companies, such as Augusta and Holloway. These companies provide him with blank sweatshirts, tee-shirts, headbands, hats, warm-up suits, shorts and long-sleeved tees, he says.

He then asks customers what design, color and style they would like. They have the option of creating their own designs, or using ones predesigned by Goldblatt.

"I'm always looking for new designs," he says. "I have this feature on my Web site . where if you send me a design that I use, I give you a free sweatshirt."

Some of his designs include the logo Breakmark, an Ultimate Frisbee term referring to creating room to make a pass, with the lastKturned into a man with a Frisbee in hand. Also, catchy phrases like "Ultimate Frisbee players have a strong desire to go horizontal," "I am woman, watch me score," and "Ultimate Frisbee players are used to spreading the offense," adorn his gear.

In formulating his line of apparel, Goldblatt also wanted clothing he could comfortably wear for extended periods of time.

"It's one thing to wear a jersey for an hour and a half on Wednesday night when you're watching the soccer game," he says. "But it is a whole different thing when you are playing for hours, sweating, bumping into people, getting pushed and throwing."

And the team is playing for hours.

"It's not like baseball or basketball where there are a set number of games," he says.

"There are sectionals, where all the teams from the Boston area play. Four matches in one day, for the whole weekend."

Goldblatt has made it his job to ensure that inadequate clothing is never a distraction for the team during these grueling tournaments.

"It's about focusing on the game," he adds. "If you are playing for hours, and you are worried about some plastic letters itching you on your back, you are not going to be able to focus on the game."

And Goldblatt knows about focus. He has devoted a large chunk of time to his burgeoning company, he says.

"How many hours are there in a week?" he asks. "I'm not going to say it takes all my time, but I'm devoted."

That might be just the tip of the iceberg.

"I've heard him, through the walls, up at seven o'clock in the morning, planning on how to get home and pick up supplies, or drop product off," Favazza said.

But Goldblatt operates by night as well.

"Last Friday night, as we were ready to go out, he stopped us and asked for half an hour more to finish a design," Favazza said.

Goldblatt is the first to admit that he often has a one-track mind.

"Yeah, I'm passionate," he acknowledges.

"And it is time consuming. I'm in class, and I'm thinking about designs. I'm lying in bed, and I'm thinking about designs.
