BLC wants sweat-free apparel
The Brandeis Labor Coalition is lobbying the University to join The Designated Supplier Program, which certifies factories that treat their workers based on certain standards. In a letter to Mark Collins, the head of university services, the club argued that joining would ensure factories producing Brandeis apparel pay workers a living wage. It also argued that they negotiate with a labor union.
Collins wrote in an e-mail to the Justice that he is in the process of reviewing the program.
"The BLC has asked that the University sign on to the concept of the DSP program," he wrote. "That is the direction I am towards."
Dan Mauer '06, a BLC member, said he first approached Collins in September, but many of the proposal's details had yet to be worked out.
"So far, we've gotten a positive reaction," Mauer said.
He said that about 10 schools across the country are committed to implementing the Designated Supplier Program, including Duke University and Georgetown University.
