Tennis: Brandeis nets three, climbs up to 3-4
The men's tennis team cruised to its third-consecutive win Saturday with a 6-1 drubbing of Clark University. The win followed a 5-2 victory at Skidmore College Wednesday. Brandeis had rebounded from an 0-4 start to a 3-4 record before a home match against U.S. Coast Guard Academy Monday, which ended too late for this edition."We're coming together as a team real well," head coach Ben Lamanna said. "I think these guys are starting to have more fun out here."
The match featured a comeback in No. 3 singles by Cliff Silverman '07, who rallied from one set behind and down 1-5 in the third [set] to win 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
"[Silverman] had a good match," Lamanna said. "He doubted himself in the beginning, but he refuses to lose. For me, to know that [Silverman] can do that is awesome."
Sam Jonas '07, the No. 1 singles player, continued his early-season dominance, defeating Anuj Ladha 6-0, 6-2. Jonas said he is still getting back into form following his recovery from a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the fall season.
"I feel like my level dropped a little bit because I'm still a little bit out of shape," said Jonas. "I still have to get used to closing out matches."
Lamanna said Jonas' shoulder is fine, but that he needs to be more aggressive.
"[Jonas] pretty much recovered fully," he said. "Mentally, it's another story. He doesn't feel like he can go after it."
In No. 2 singles, Michael Vulfovich '07 took control early to win 6-2, 6-0.
The Judges won easily in the doubles matches, sweeping Clark 3-0. Jonas and Silverman led the way by winning 8-6, Vulfovich and Scott Schulman '09 won 8-4 and Hart Comess-Daniels '06 and Chris Hersel '06 won 8-2.
Jordan Bieber '07 sat out Saturday's match with a bruised calf after getting injured during an off-court practice. Bieber's injury is not serious, and he should be back soon, Lamanna said.
In other singles action, Schulman won 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 4 match and Comess-Daniels won 6-1, 6-3 in No. 5. Clark's only win of the day came in the No. 6 singles match when Ben Gross beat Derek Tesser '09 3-6, 7-6 and 10-8 in a hard-fought match.
Despite the Judges' recent success, Lamanna says his team is playing too cautiously at times.
"Good teams don't do that," he said. "Good teams are aggressive."
Last Wednesday, the Judges took all three doubles matches and went on to beat Skidmore 5-2. Jonas was victorious in No. 1 singles with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, and Vulfovich overwhelmed his opponent 6-1, 6-0 during his No. 2 singles match.
In other matches from Wednesday, Bieber won at the No. 3 spot, 6-2 and 6-3 and Chris Hersel '06 took No. 6 in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. Silverman lost in the No. 4 spot, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 and Schulman fell in two sets, 6-1 and 6-4.
The Judges next match is against Wheaton College at home on Thursday at 4 p.m.
