The men's team dropped consecutive 6-1 decisions this past weekend to Bates College on Saturday and to Colby College on Sunday, putting their record at 6-3 for the season. Prior to the losses, the Judges were riding a six-game win streak including a 6-1 defeat to Babson College on Wednesday. The women's team was also in action on sunday, and saw their three-game winning streak snapped in a 6-3 loss to Colby."This weekend showed our immaturity," coach Ben Lamanna said. "We're not the team that we thought we were."

Sam Jonas '07 had an early lead in No. 1 singles spot over Colby freshman Bryan Brown, but things went downhill from there. Following his 6-3 victory in the first set, Jonas won only one more game, losing 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

"After winning the first set, I played some loose points early on in the second set," Jonas said. "Had I been able to turn it around, I would have won the match."

Jonas added that his six-month layoff following an injury and surgery on his shoulder continues to affect his play.

"The fact that I was out for six months means I'm out of shape." Jonas said. "I'm not moving like I usually would, and that's my biggest strength. I don't have as much pop on my strokes."

Mike Vulfovich '07 saw his personal five-game singles winning streak end with a 6-4, 7-5 loss in No. 2 singles. Jordan Bieber '07, Scott Schulman '09 and Cliff Silverman '07 each dropped straight set losses in No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively.

The Judges lone victory against Colby came in No. 6 singles, where Chris Hersel '06 beat Colby freshman Nick Rosen-Wachs 6-1, 6-2.

"Chris really took it to his opponent today," Lamanna said. "It was really good to see, because he was having some confidence issues, and he showed a lot of heart and guts."

Although competitive, the doubles teams were unable to break through for a victory. The No. 1 team of Jonas and Bieber dropped an 8-5 decision, while the No. 2 team of Vulfovich and Schulman and the No. 3 team of Silverman and Hersel each lost 8-6.

The women's team's loss followed a 6-3 victory over Bates on Saturday and a 7-2 win over Babson on Wednesday, bringing their record to 3-2 on the season.

In the day's first event, Jen Krueger '07 and Colleen Donnelly '08 raced to a 6-1 lead in No. 1 doubles, only to lose the next seven games to drop an 8-6 decision.

"The doubles matches set the tone today because it gave [Colby] a lot of confidence going into the singles," Lamanna said. "We have to be able to finish out points, finish out sets and finish out matches."

Krueger and Donnelly did not fare any better in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, losing 7-5, 7-6 and 6-2, 6-3. Senior Lauren Uhlmann clinched the match for Colby at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Judges captain Shani Reich '06.

On Saturday, the men's team also lost decisively to the Bobcats 6-1. Vulfovich scored the only victory on the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles, while the Judges dropped every other match in straight sets as their six-game winning streak came to a sudden end.

"We were confident before the match, but once we got on the court, we tightened up," Hersel said. "We had the idea in our mind that they were so much better than us because they had made nationals before. If we had played up to our abilities, we could have competed with them and possibly even beaten them by playing consistently."

Meanwhile, the women's doubles team swept their three matches on the way to a 6-3 victory against Bates. Bates rallied to within 4-3 by winning three singles matches, but Ana Katz '08 locked up the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 5 singles spot, giving Lamanna his first victory against his former team.

Despite the losses, Lamanna is confident the men will use this weekend to improve their games.

"There [are] going to be a few mix-ups, but we're going to keep marching on and getting better and better," Lamanna said. "We're just going to keep trying to gain experience and learn from every match."

The men compete next Tuesday at Bowdoin College before facing New York University at home on Saturday. The women will compete at Tufts on Tuesday and at Bowdoin on Thursday.
