U2 proved that it can, in fact, make it on its own, when it took home the most trophies at the Grammy Awards Wednesday night. The band's five Grammys included Best Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, Song of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Group for "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own," and Best Rock Song for "City of Blinding Lights." This year's winnings bring U2's trophy count to a grand total of 22 Grammys.Another notable winner of the night, Mariah Carey, won three of the eight categories for which she was nominated. Carey took home trophies for Best R&B album for The Emancipation of Mimi and Best R&B song and Best R&B Vocal Performance for "We Belong Together."

Other big winners included John Legend, Alison Krauss and Union Station and Kanye West, all taking home three Grammys apiece. Legend won for Best New Artist, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Album. Alison Krauss and Union Station won Best Country Album, Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Country Instrumental Performance. Kanye West rounds out the big winners' group with trophies for Best Rap Solo Performance, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Album for Late Registration.

Green Day took home the Record of the Year award for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," upsetting the other, more favored artists in the category.

Much to Carey's chagrin, the award show focused more on musical performances such as Madonna's scintillating duet with the animated band Gorillaz than acceptances, giving out most of the Grammys prior to the telecast. Unfortunately for the diva, only the five categories she was shut out of were included in the televised program. While the show managed to keep Carey's ego in check, however, it only served to inflate the already-bloated self-image of U2, who were able to dominate the three-and-a-half hours more than any other artist with several acceptance speeches.
