Thanksgiving shuttles to Logan Airport last week arrived at Brandeis up to three hours late due to the rain and road accidents, according to the Senate chair of the Union services committee, which funds these shuttles. Classic Coach, the University-hired bus company, could not be reached by Monday afternoon. Tuesday's 2 p.m. shuttle picked students up at 5:15 p.m., and Wednesday's three shuttles were up to 45 minutes late, Class of 2008 Senator and Union Services Committee chair Darren Gallant said.

The company reported "major traffic problems on Interstate 95 North on Tuesday," Gallant said, including, "multiple accidents, slick road conditions due to the drizzle and a lot of cars on the road."

Non-Senate Union Services Committee chair Lauren Becker '08 said that on Tuesday, "Darren and I were able to get in contact with the bus company, and were able to call taxis for all the students who were scheduled to be on the bus."

Becker said students shared taxis to the airport and split the cost. "They will get their full refunds from the $10 Turkey Shuttles," she said.

The committee is working on compensating students for their missed shuttles, Gallant said. "At the moment, we are fighting for a refund with Classic Coach because although we might be a school, we are still paying for their service, and the fact that these buses continued to show up late is unacceptable."

Other shuttles encountered delays, though more minor ones. "On Wednesday, the [first] bus arrived 45 minutes late and students with flights that were coming up quickly took taxis," Gallant said. However, the noon shuttle left "pretty much on time," and the 1 p.m. did not arrive late enough for taxis to be needed. Lastly, the 3 p.m. to Logan and 6 p.m. to NYC/Long Island left "more or less on time," Gallant said.

Caroline Weitzman '08 waited for the 1 pm Wednesday shuttle until it arrived at 1:45. "My flight was scheduled to leave at 3 p.m., so I was anxious at and annoyed by the change of plans," she said. Weitzman said the shuttle dropped her off at 2:20 p.m. "Luckily, Logan was not nearly as crowded and hectic as I had expected it to be for the day before Thanksgiving, and I was able to get through security quickly and make my flight."

Ava Morgenstern '06 also took the scheduled 1 p.m. shuttle. "My flight wasn't scheduled to leave until 4:30 p.m., so I knew I wouldn't miss it," she said.

Gallant said he is dissatisfied with Classic Coach's handling of the situation and will not recommend them next year. "At the moment, [the company is] attempting to pin all the delays on the weather, even though the weather wasn't bad."

"A re-evaluation of the Turkey Shuttles will happen this winter," Gallant said, "to determine how the shuttles can best operate in order to serve the Brandeis community in the future."

The money the Senate earns from the shuttles is put toward other large projects of the Services Committee such as the annual Midnight Buffet. Despite losing money from refunding students, Gallant said the committee's budget will not suffer from this loss. "Thankfully this year, for one of the first times in many years, the selling of Turkey Shuttles broke even with what was spent and then made a profit.
