Pop Culture: Tom Cruise fires his sister; Kate Hudson accused of having an eating disorder
Tom Cruise proves there is something thicker than blood-reputation. This week Cruise announced his decision to fire his former publicist, sister Lee Anne DeVette, in favor of the high-powered firm Rogers & Cowan. In the press release, Cruise emphasized the good intentions he had with the switch, explaining that he was transferring the responsibility of handling his philanthropic activities to DeVette. In addition to helping Cruise with new endeavors, DeVette will become the new publicist for Katie Holmes, Cruise's fianc. Rogers & Cowan will also take over the publicity for Cruise's production company, Cruise-Wagner productions, which will produce Mission: Impossible 3 next summer.
Cruise's sister, who took over for Pat Kingsley as Cruise's publicist last year, might be partially to blame for Cruise suffering his worst publicity ever this summer. Cruise's likability plummeted after his infamous couch-jumping declaration of love on Oprah and continued to decrease as he became a strong advocate for Scientology. While DeVette could have done a better job covering Cruise's tracks, maybe Cruise should rethink some of his own fanatical actions and claims against modern psychology before placing the blame for his tarnished reputation elsewhere.
Surprise, surprise, another celebrity is denying tabloid allegations that she is battling an eating disorder. No, it's not Mary-Kate this time, but another Kate-Kate Hudson. The actress is suing five publications, which published photos of her and accused her of having an eating disorder. Hudson claimed that her "weight and diet was of a healthy nature," and still is. The dramatic weight loss seems to be an attempt to shed excess pregnancy fat, after the birth of her almost-two-year-old son Ryder Russell Robinson.
The actress is currently shooting her next movie, You, Me and Dupree. Hudson may not have an eating disorder, but the published photos of her appearing "dangerously thin" leave her health claims highly suspect.
