The College Democrats have launched a voter registration drive, with the goal of registering at least 200 students by Dec. 1, club president Marc Rotter '06 said.In an attempt to make the registration process easier for students, the group has assigned a coordinator to each residential quad. Students will be able to e-mail their registration information to vote@brandeis.edu.

The coordinator for each student's respective quad will then deliver the necessary form. Once the form is completed and returned, the coordinator will mail it to the appropriate government office.

"It will take less than five minutes," Rotter said. "We have lowered the [individual] cost of registration to virtually none."

The group plans to publicize its efforts by distributing flyers and sending volunteers door-to-door to inform students about the registration process. "Word of mouth will be key for this campaign," Rotter said.

Registration campaign co-chair David Emer '09 said the drive will help students reconnect to local political issues in their home states.

"The problem is [students] don't live in the community that we vote in," he said. "For [the years spent in college], we vote, technically, in the last town that we lived in, as opposed to the town that we are now living in."

The Democrats are in the process of contacting other campus political groups, including the Brandeis Republicans, to participate in the drive.

"We're not specifically targeting Democratic individuals," Emer said. "We're trying to get as many people registered as possible."

The club has assigned eight task forces to train volunteers and coordinate efforts with other clubs.

Rotter said the first training session for club volunteers on how to register students to vote will be held on Wednesday.

Matt Rogers '08 said the registration drive will be especially beneficial for the majority of first-years who can vote for the first time this year,

"I think that making sure to focus on freshmen is important," Rogers said, "because a lot of [first-years] couldn't vote last year and may not have registered for this year."

Emer said the first event of the drive will take place Sunday when Utah State Representative Patrice Arent (D) and Massachusetts State Senator Jay Kaufman (D) will speak in the Shapiro Campus Center Multi-Purpose Room at 12:30 p.m.
