The men's tennis team easily toppled Union College 6-1 at home on Sunday. The victory was a return to form after the team dropped a close match to visiting conference rival New York University on Friday 4-3. Brandeis is 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the UAA, but the Judges are 6-4 this spring. The Judges visited Salve Regina College Monday in a match that ended too late for this edition.

The Judges dominated the Dutchmen on Sunday, losing only two matches.

"We expected to win the match today," Captain Seth Green '05 said. "We didn't expect an easy win, but our confidence was good coming in."

Captain Rob Friedman '06, who was promoted to the No. 3 singles spot, was impressive in his 6-1, 6-0 victory against senior Drew Goldstein.

"I was feeling very confident coming off my [No. 4 singles spot win at NYU]," Friedman said. "I was on my game today and I was able to hit my shots well with placement and hit them hard from the start, and he wasn't able to keep up."

Union College's Trey Minter, down 3-0 in the first set, dropped out of the No. 1 singles match because of back problems, giving the victory to Sam Jonas '07.

"I saw that his back was bothering him in the doubles match already, and I guess it just got worse in singles," Jonas said.

Adam Sher '07, Cliff Silverman '07 and Ariel Burman '08 were all victorious in their singles matches. Mike Vulfovich '07 suffered the only Brandeis loss in singles play, dropping out of the No. 2 singles match after two split sets because of a pulled groin.

Brandeis also handily beat the Dutchmen in doubles. Jonas and Jordan Bieber '07 defeated Minter and junior Bill Goldstein 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles spot while Vulfovich and Sher beat rookies Tom Haynes and Vic Ravikumar 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles spot.

The victory came on the heels of a disheartening 4-3 loss to NYU on Friday.

The Judges split the singles matches against NYU on Friday, winning at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 spots but dropping the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 spots. Jonas won the No. 2 singles match 7-6, 6-1 against Yellowjackets sophomore Ian Corn.

Friedman prevailed in a hard-fought match against junior Kolby Loft in the No. 4 singles spot, winning two of three sets 6-2, 6-4. Sher won the other singles match 6-2, 6-3 against Violets sophomore Zubair Ghouse.

But the doubles point proved to be the deciding factor at NYU.

The Judges' No. 1 doubles team of Jonas and Bieber fell 9-7 while Friedman and Hart Commes-Daniels '06 lost their No. 2 doubles match 8-5.

Vulfovich and Sher won No. 3 doubles 8-5, but the Judges had already conceded the decisive point.

"It was a tough loss," Coach Matt Porter said. "But it didn't really hurt us in the standings that much and we're heading into the UAAs with confidence."

The Judges have only two matches remaining before the UAA tournament begins at home on Friday.

"We have the full potential to play competitively and beat a couple of teams which we've lost to very narrowly [like Rochester and NYU]," Porter said. "If we get that opportunity, we're looking forward to that.
