The Judges were rolling on a three-game winning streak, but all that changed this weekend. The men's tennis team lost back-to-back home games, falling 7-0 to Bates College on Friday and 4-2 to the University of Rochester on Sunday. The losses came after a 7-0 road win over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Thursday.

Brandeis is now 5-6 for the season.

Sam Jonas '07 and Mike Vulfovich '07, two of six sophomores on the team of 11, were the only Judges to win matches against the Yellowjackets on Sunday.

Jonas defeated Rochester senior Avinash Reddy in two sets in the No. 1 singles spot. The first set went to 7-6, ending in a 7-5 tiebreaker in Jonas' favor. Jonas took the next set, 6-3, to seal one of two wins for the Judges.

Vulfovich also claimed a victory in the No. 2 singles spot, beating rookie Eric Hansen in a 7-5 tiebreaker. The first set went to Vulfovich, 6-4, but the second ended in a tie.

Brandeis just barely lost the doubles point, dropping three close matches. Jonas and Vulfovich were defeated 9-8 in the No. 1 doubles spot.

The Judges lost the next two doubles matches 8-5, giving the Yellowjackets the doubles point.

"I know we are looking forward to seeing them at UAA's because I think we have a very good chance of beating them there," captain Seth Green '05 said.

Before losing to the Yellowjackets, the Judges got shutout at home 7-0 by Bates College on Friday. With most matches lost by a large margin, the only positive for the Judges came from captain Rob Friedman '06, whose No. 5 singles match with Bobcats' senior Sam Duvall went to three sets before Friedman was toppled in the last set.

"Bates is a nationally ranked team and I don't think any of us really believed we could win," Hart Commes-Daniels '06 said. "We got behind early in most matches and for the most part, never gave ourselves a chance to get back in it. I think we played like we expected to lose."

Jonas also fell short in the No. 1 singles spot. He lost the first set to All-American junior Will Boe-Wiegaard 6-2, but almost mounted a comeback in the second set before losing 7-5.

The Judges lost the rest of the matches by scores of 6-3 or worse in seven out of 13 sets, and also struggled badly in doubles, losing all three of the matches 8-2.

"By the end of this season, I think we can get to the level where if we played [Bates] again, it would be a much closer match," Green said.

Before losing to Bates, Brandeis capped off a season-high three-game winning streak with a 7-0 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Thursday.

Brandeis opened the contest by dominating the doubles matches with three wins.

Vulfovich and Jordan Bieber '07 fought two close matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots respectively. Each match went to a tiebreaker, and both won with ten points in the last set.

"Everyone fought hard, and we came out with the sweep," Friedman said. "That is a long drive to New London, Conn., but it was much more pleasant because we won in the fashion we did."

The Judges host Connecticut College today at 3 p.m. and New York University Friday at 3:30 p.m. before playing Union College at home Sunday at 1 p.m.
