I was amused by the feature called "'Deis
demystified: truth behind the folklore" by Hadas
Kroitoru in today's edition of the Justice. I
was a freshman during the 1959-60 football
season, and actually attended a game or two. At
the time, the excuse given for cancelling the
program was that it was too difficult to field a
competitive team in a small school (1400)
without compromising academic standards.I had the misfortune to live in the dorm where
many of the out of work and somewhat disgruntled
ex-football players lived. With excess time on
their hands, they took to revelry, which resulted
in substantial damage to the then new furniture.
All residents of the dorm were charged a
replacement fee which was collected just before
graduation, or else!
Even back then, when Brandeis was just 10 years
old, there were myths about the "old days", some
of which were codified in the Handbook as notes
labeled, "heard around campus." It became a
quest for new students to learn the meaning of
each of these cryptic references, although even
after trying it, the significance of the phrase,
"Let's go to Providence for coffee" still eludes
me.
Its good to know that the thirst for knowledge
still persists in Waltham.
