Athletic Director Jeff Cohen's '64 sudden resignation last week has sparked rumors that he was forced to resign. Several tips to the Justice have alleged that Cohen was-according to some-"summarily fired." Others say he left out of frustration over the Administration's oversight of the athletic department. The Justice could not confirm this and members of the Administration did not comment to the Justice. Cohen did not return the Justice's phone calls.

"It was time for a change," Cohen told the Boston Globe on Sunday. "I had been there a long time and I was proud of the things we accomplished here. But it became obvious to me that I couldn't go much further in doing what I wanted to do."

According to the Globe, Cohen would not describe the specific circumstances that lead to his resignation; however he did say it was out of concern for the sports program. In his comments to the Globe alluded to some decision being made about the sports program but would not elaborate as to what the decision was.

"When the decision was made, I thought the best thing to do was walk away," he said "[A] lame duck is not a good thing to be. I'd be in the way. I love Brandeis, and I don't want to be in the way."

Cohen, who worked as a manager for the Boston Celtics for more than a decade before coming to Brandeis in 1986, is credited with raising the majority of the $25 million that was required to build the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center. Cohen told the Globe he was seriously considering a return to professional sports.
