In what was one of the worst halftime shows in Super Bowl history, CBS incited controversy over the indecent exposure of Janet Jackson's breast. The incident occurred during the final song of the show, as Justin Timberlake performed his hit, "Rock Your Body." While he moved around the stage, Janet Jackson provided a cameo by dancing seductively around him. After ending the song with the lyrics, "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song," Timberlake ripped away part of Jackson's gladiator-like outfit to reveal one of her breasts, adorned with a sun-shaped nipple decoration. Judging by the relevance of the lyrics, the shocking performance appeared to be planned. However, in a CBS news article, Timberlake claims the incident was unintentional and blames the exposure on a "wardrobe malfunction." In a similar manner, CBS officials state that the incident was not rehearsed and that "there was no indication any such thing would happen." MTV, the producer of the halftime show, also claims no responsiblity for the impromptu addition to the performance.

Viewers around the country were shocked and many called CBS to express their disbelief. As one of the most watched shows of the year on a major network, the Super Bowl attracts an audience of all ages. Many families that tuned in to watch the half time show were appalled by the inappropriate display of skin. Tom Poleman, senior vice president of programming at New York City radio station Z100, stated his outrage in an interview with CBS News. "This is a time everyone would have known that children would be in the audience. This is a national event, a prime time event. That's really what's outrageous," he said.

In a statement released later on Monday night, Jackson apologizes for the exposure, saying that it was a last minute stunt that went too far. Sha also acknowledges that CBS and MTV were unaware of the change in the program.

The incident is now under investigation by the FCC, and could result in a potential fine of up to $27,500 for CBS, which is the maximum punishment incurred for indecency.

The half time ensemble also featured washout performers Kid Rock, P.Diddy and Nelly, with a brief introduction by Jessica Simpson. These performers, who haven't graced the billboard charts for many months now, gave lackluster presentations of their old hit singles. After Simpson played off of the "choose to vote" campaign by shouting, "Houston, choose to party!" Janet Jackson began the show with an energetic dance performance of "Rhythm Nation." While it was an admirable performance, the song has not been played on the radio since the early nineties and was most likely lost on the younger audience members. Kid Rock attempted to make a political statement during his performance of "Bawitaba" with his patriotic outfit of an American flag sewed as a tunic.

P.Diddy was inappropriately dressed for the Houston weather in his puffy white overcoat lined with fur. His short rendition of "Mo' Money Mo' Problems," was as heavy and awkward as his outfit. He was joined on stage by Nelly, who soon dominated the spotlight with his over-played single, "Hot in Herre." His back-up dancers were borderline risqu when they proceeded to rip off their cheerleader outfits at the end of the song to reveal short shorts and tiny jerseys. The show ended with Justin Timberlake's performance of "Rock Your Body" with Janet Jackson, featuring the now infamous "breast flap incident."

Sadly enough, the most impressive part of the halftime show was the performance by the University of Houston marching band. The band gave a rousing instrumental rendition of Outkast's single, "The Way You Move."

This year's show makes one yearn for the days when seasoned performers and tactful special effects graced the field during half time, shows that could entertain without the need to shock or appall.
