Ice hockey club defeats Anarchy, ties X-Rays
The Brandeis ice hockey club recovered from two tough games to beat the New England Senior Hockey League (NESHL) Anarchy 2-0. The win followed on the heels of a 6-1 loss to rival Rhode Island College. Ben Mathes '05 opened the scoring for the Judges in the second period by knocking in a rebound in the goal-mouth.
Dave Sagaser '07 iced the game with under a minute left by scoring in the empty net.
Goalie Mike Cohen (GRAD) turned in a masterful performance, standing on his head to record his third shutout of the season.
"Last night was one of the best games we've had all year," Co-captain Eric Kluger '04 said.
We played as a team and came back from a pretty bad loss against RIC. It was just one of those pressure games where we stepped up and kept the lead.
The night before, Brandeis was frustrated by Rhode Island College. RIC scored five goals in the first period en route to a 6-1 route.
The game was closer than the score would indicate. After an abysmal first period marked by rickety defense and spotty offense, the team held RIC to just two goals.
Mathes scored the only goal for the Judges, ripping a shot from the top of the circle to make the score 5-1.
"Even though it was a rough loss, we really played with them in the second and third periods. If you take away the first period, I think we would have won," Kluger said.
Brandeis started the week with a 5-5 tie against the NESHL X-Rays.
The Judges came blazing out of the starting gate, scoring four goals in the first period.
The X-Rays added one in the second to cut the lead to 4-1.
In the third period, the team fell apart. The X-Rays netted two goals on one shift midway through the period, a goal late in the period and the game-tier with a minute left.
Brandeis nearly put in the game winner with 10 seconds left, but a bad angle shot went high and wide.
"It was a rough game. it was more of a loss than a win, but at least we got the point," Kluger said.
After going 1-1-1 this week, the team is in first place in its division. The Judges return to the rink on Sunday.
