Friday at about 11:00 a.m., Public Safety apprehended Bruce George Stuart at the Heller School and charged him with trespassing and larceny. Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan told the Justice that a female worker at the Heller School had found Mr. Stuart with her wallet. She took back the wallet and then another Heller School employee "stopped the individual" until police arrived. Callahan said that upon arrival, officers Ronald Haley and Alan Reece had enough probable cause to arrest Stuart. Stuart was arraigned in Waltham District Court and is now awaiting trial. He was also given a warning against trespassing signed by Callahan prohibiting Stuart from setting foot on the Brandeis campus.

"It doesn't appear that Stuart has any gainful occupation," Callahan said. "It appears he may have been coming up here for some period of time."

"A lot of crimes are a crime of opportunity, and larceny is a crime of opportunity," he said. "My belief is that Stuart tried to fit in with the community and just came in here and was caught in the act of stealing something."

Public Safety is working to see if Stuart is connected with several other similar incidents on campus this year, including the theft of a wallet in Gosman.

Callahan pointed out that the common denominator in the string of similar incidents is people leaving their property unattended.

Public Safety would not release the names of the witnesses and the Justice could not locate them.

The Justice was unable to contact Stuart.
