Boston-based band The Secret Channel will perform at Cholmondeley's on Friday night. The group has drawn comparisons to Sonic Youth, Fugazi and the Dead Kennedys, making a conglomerate of early '90s indie grunge rock. They even have the token female bassist (Christine Moore).justArts got the chance to listen to their demo CD; it is a combination of tight drumming and bass lines, sweet, yet hard vocals and catchy, rock-driven guitar riffs. It is obvious that the group has a lot of potential, and the music is definitely worth listening to.

In songs like "I Still Need You" and "No Substitute," lead singer Eddie Gutierrez's smooth voice floats over the pop rock music, but the lyrics could stand to be a bit more original . "There's just no substitute for you" does not seem too creative.

"Moon Patrol" has an excellent instrumental introduction, which puts feedback to good use, and draws the listener in to the tight, catchy rhythm. The lyrics are much improved on this song and the tune has a great groove to it. Drummer Jim Dias's work is excellent here as well. This song is indicative of the group's true talent.

"The Loudest Sound" is another quality song in terms of lyrics and uses Dias's full drumming potential. In "We Don't Care" the bass and drums work well together to create a sense of urgency that is present in the lyrics as well.

The Secret Channel is definitely worth checking out, especially because they will be right here at Chum's. The band has a lot of potential and could very well go far in their endeavors. Their debut album will hopefully be released later this year.
