Union Advocate Josh Sugarman '05, and others involved in a Union Judicial case he filed last week with Union Treasurer Sophy Yem '04, have reached a settlement and the case has been withdrawn. The settlement will undo the senate's reclaiming of the funds - both Senate and executive money - and would instead have the Senate create a temporary by-law dealing with roll-over funds, such as this money, and eventually would transfer most of it into the current Senate budget. Over $6,700 was jointly allocated last year by Union President Ben Brandzel '03 and the Union Senate as Brandeis' bid to host the 15th annual National Student Campaign against Hunger and Homelessness National Conference. As a result of the bid's deferment, the Senate last week passed Senate Money Request #08 reclaiming the funds both allocated by the Senate and Brandzel.

"When the Senate did what it did, Yem and Sugarman were concerned that the act was not backed by constitutional clarity and that it was constitutionally ambiguous . not necessarily backed by the constitution," Brandzel said.

The two dissenting senators in the vote to reclaim the money, Class of 2003 Senators Aziz Nekoukar '03 and Gregg Leppo '03 e-mailed the Senate.

"There is a reason we have a two week money request process, but it really feels like we only follow it about half the time. The financial problems of the Student Union are now compounded by the lack of consistency in dealing with rollover," they wrote.

Brandzel explained that while the Union Charter provides for the money rollover to take place between semesters, it does not address the rollover from one year to the next.

"Working in negotiation with Josh and Sophy, the Senate crafted a by-law which would provide a legal backing for the actions of reclaiming last year's rollover from the Senate," Brandzel said.

Class of 2004 Senator Nicole Karlbach '04 voted to reclaim the funds. "I look forward to voting on a by-law which would solidify the Senate's position on this central issue," she said.

"The Senate is the most representative branch in student government, and we would like to allocate this money for student use.
