Today, Students for a Just Society (SJS) will launch a campaign to bring Fair-Trade coffee to Brandeis. Fair-trade coffee is predominantly grown in Central America by farm cooperatives of farmers and then sold to the United States. "What's novel about that (the cooperatives) is they (the farmers) make more of a profit, they have a more of a living wage. They (cooperatives) are a community of farmers," SJS Core Committee member Paul Adler '04 said.

Adler also added this type of coffee is environmentally sustainable.

Although the Utopian Blend currently offered at Java City is Fair-Trade coffee, SJS hopes Cholmondley's will have it.

Adler said that since Cholmondleys is independently run, there is no issue of pressuring Aramark.

Adler said students who want to help with the campaign would be primarily doing research to find out which brand of Fair-Trade coffee would be economical and taste the best.

"There are some people that like to have the option of buying a product they feel good about . It's just a simple way (buying a cup of coffee) of supporting something," Adler said.
