Perhaps the most important goal that was achieved through this week's Coming Out events was a true mingling of gay and straight students. Too often, even those who are "accepting" of alternate lifestyles isolate themselves from the gay community. This bare minimum of tolerance ("Let them do whatever they want, but keep them away from me"), is not the equality that we all should be striving for. This week's events, however, show that Brandeis students are truly moving toward complete acceptance of every lifestyle; notably, a sizable portion of those attending the Trisk-sponsored dance, "Control," were straight. It is also important, however, to keep gay rights issues in campus discourse beyond Coming Out Week. Students have also been working to create a new committee to ensure that Brandeis is offering enough resources for members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning and supporting (GLBTQS) community on campus. The creation of the Ad Hoc GLBTQS Action Committee is clearly a step in the right direction. Hopefully, they will aid other groups in a push for more events promoting awareness and support for gay issues throughout the rest of this year and beyond.
