Student Union Advocate Josh Sugarman '05 filed a University Judiciary case seeking "an immediate injunction" which would prohibit the transfer of approximately $6,750 from the Union Treasurer, he claims the Senate's actions in reclaiming money allocated last year and using it this year violated the Union Charter. He petitioned for a full hearing on the matter. The senate appropriated the money last year to use towards bidding for the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness National Conference. The Union Senate debated whether to reclaim the funds, but after making the issue an emergency funding request which they were able to bypass normal funding procedure, and, in a 7-2 vote, reclaimed the money. Some questioned if the Senate had the right to touch money already allocated, whether it is right to use last year's money and whether or not this money would count as rollover.

"That (9enate) action was in violation of the Student Union Constitution. This UJ case is in an effort to ensure that the individual branches of the student government are held accountable for their actions under our Constitution," Sugarman told the Justice.

"While there was justification for the caution of past treasurers, we believe this is student money and that the Senate has both the constitutional power and, indeed, the responsibility to unlock this money for student use," Senator Michael Corwin '05 told the Justice.
