David Gould and Michael Kalafatas retire from admissions
In late June, Senior Vice President for Student Enrollment Jean Eddy announced that Associate Vice President for Students and Enrollment David Gould had decided to take "semi-retirement" after 27 years as member of the Brandeis staff and community. Gould isn't the only veteran retiring from Admissions this year; joining Gould is Director of Admissions Mike Kalafatas who is leaving Brandeis after 35 years.
"David has been a wonderfully valuable colleague and source of support for
me since I first came to Brandeis," Eddy wrote in a campus-wide e-mail.
During his 27 years at Brandeis, Gould was Dean of Admissions and also Financial Aid. According to Eddy this experience made him an "obvious choice" for Associate Vice President for Students and Enrollment.
Although he is planning to develop his own private practice, according to Eddy Gould will continue to assist Brandeis's enrollment efforts.
"It is difficult to think of Brandeis without David, but I know that all of you join with me and President Reinharz in expressing our deep appreciation to him for his many contributions to Brandeis over the years and in wishing him every success in his new venture," Eddy wrote in the campus wide e-mail.
According to Director of Enrollment Deena Whitfield Kalafatas's colleagues describe Kalafatas as "classy," "sensitive to others," "a great story-teller," "passionate about and loyal to Brandeis," "attentive to detail," and a "gentleman scholar."
"What I found most appealing about Michael was the intellectual curiosity that made him a lifelong learner," Whitfield said.
In an e-mail to the Justice, Whitfield describes Kalafatas's intellectual curiosity, pointing out that he "became interested in his Greek roots, traveled to Greece and learned Greek in his 50s."
Kalafatas will be traveling to Greece this fall and upon his return will be publishing his first book in the spring.
"Michael was a generous and thoughtful leader in Admissions, always willing to mentor an aspiring admissions professional of which I happen to be one.
In fact, there are many colleges and universities whose admissions offices are led by professionals that were mentored by Michael Kalafatas," Whitfield said.
