The men and women’s swimming and diving team picked up 12 wins over the visiting Colby College on Saturday, but fell in the overall competition.

The squad lost 155-141 on the men’s side, while the women were defeated 162-103.

Edan Zitelny ’17 said that the meet was decided by a couple of close races that the Judges were unable to win.

“I’m happy with how the meet went overall,” he said. “At the end, it came to some close touches that did not go our way.”

The men’s team won eight of the 16 meets and got three wins each from Zitelny and captain Max Fabian ’15.

Fabian continued his strong performances in distance events, taking the 1,000-yard freestyle race in 10 minutes, 14.82 seconds, the meet’s only distance event.

His time was 23.1 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, teammate Joey Barr ’18.

Fabian also won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:03.23 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:18.03. Zach Diamond ’18 was the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly, stopping the clock at 2:06.34.

Zitelny won both of the meet’s backstroke events, cruising to victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.38 seconds, winning the race by 1.18 seconds. He won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.87, besting Taku Harada ’18 by just over two seconds.

Zitelny also grabbed the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.56 and swam the third leg of the 200-yard medley relay.

The relay team finished in the runner-up position in the relay with a total time of 1:44.46, less than two seconds off the pace set by the winning quartet.

“I think the key was coming off a training trip in Puerto Rico [on Jan. 4], where we do not have to worry about the academic enviroment,” remarked Zitelny.

“As a team, we had some really great training, and I had an opportunity to refine some speed [aspects of racing].”

Diamond and Barr finished first and second in the 500-yard freestyle, respectively.

Diamond took the race in 5:01.72, while Barr touched the wall at the 5:08.97 mark.

The Judges’ eighth win came in the 100-yard butterfly, which Brian Luk ’16 won in 54.18 seconds. Eb Weber ’17 and Danny Smyda ’18 took fourth and fifth places in the race, timing in at 57.62 and 59.65 seconds, respectively.

Joanna Murphy ’17 picked up a pair of wins in the 1,000-yard and 500-yard freestyle races for the women’s squad.

Murphy won the former in 11:09.49 and the latter in 5:28.25. She also took third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.57, just one one- hundredth of a second behind the second-place finisher.

Brandeis swept the 200-yard individual medley, which Samantha Greenberg ’18 won in 2:33.12. Greenberg also picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay with 1:49.05.

The teams will return to the pool this Saturday when they travel to Hartford, Conn. to take on Trinity College, beginning at 1 p.m.
