New Chabad house to open

Chabad at Brandeis has opened a second house for this school year to allow students to experience a smaller Shabbat dinner environment, according to an email to the Chabad community from Peretz Chein, the rabbi of the original Chabad house at Brandeis. The new house is located at 132 South Street, near the Ninety Nine Restaurant, and will be led by Rabbi Ilan and Sarah Fuchs '05, who was president of Chabad at Brandeis during her time here. The first Chabad house is a three-story home located at 54 Turner Street. According to the Chabad at Brandeis website, "The Chabad House is a home for Jews of all denominations to learn, thrive, and most importantly, to connect.

Questions aired at faculty meeting

At the first faculty meeting of the academic year on Thursday, Prof. Harry Mairson (COSI) publicly raised concerns about the hiring last month of Steve Manos to the position of chief operating officer. In a section of the meeting reserved for comments or questions directed at University President Frederick Lawrence, Mairson came to the microphone and told President Lawrence that he was "surprised and concerned" about the appointment.

Hickey announces handbook changes

At Thursday's faculty meeting, Prof. Tim Hickey (COSI), chair of the Faculty Senate, made two significant announcements to the assembled professors, regarding the creation of a new University committee and a proposal for amendments to the faculty handbook. The Senate Council is considering the formation of a committee made up of students, faculty and administrators to examine sexual assault and harassment on campus. In an email to the Justice, Hickey described the planned committee as "a short-term committee to look into Brandeis' current policies and best practices at other institutions and to propose concrete steps." He continued that "we are not so much reevaluating as looking at best practices elsewhere and seeing what makes sense at Brandeis." After citing several studies that discuss the rise of sexual harassment and assault at high schools and colleges, Hickey concluded that the Senate hopes for "Brandeis to become a leader in the fight against sexual harassment and sexual violence on college campuses." This announcement comes at a time when sexual assault is a focal issue on campus and has also been a frequent topic of discussion in the Faculty Senate. Hickey also announced several proposals for amendments to the faculty handbook. Four of the amendments were "explicit reference[s] to the Contract Faculty Guidelines," which will help clarify the language in the handbook. Two of the amendments created new professor ranks outside of the tenure structure.

Fourteen elected to fill Union positions

Fourteen students were elected to positions in the Student Union after voting took place from midnight on Thursday to midnight on Friday. Theodore Choi '13 and Charlotte Franco '15, who both served as senators last year, will be the senators at large, with 338 and 194 votes, respectively.

University reviews on-campus dining

In an email to the student body, Student Union President Herbie Rosen '12 and Senior Vice President for Administration Mark Collins announced a "comprehensive dining review" that could bring lasting and substantial changes for University dining services. "This assessment will include a baseline review of our current operations and facilities," Rosen and Collins wrote in the email.
