FENCING: Friedman claims 3rd Judges bid for NCAA tourney

There will now be a third Brandeis fencer at the NCAA Championships. Will Friedman '09 received one of the two men's foil at-large bids in the nation to join teammates Eugene Vortsman '08 and Jeremy Simpson '06 in Houston March 16-19.Friedman finished 11th in the men's foil competition at the NCAA northeast regionals last Sunday, but still qualified thanks to a strong regular season, which included a 31-13 record and an individual championship in the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference.


Fencing: Sharp blades, shenanigans, and champions

Eugene Vortsman '08 had been a rock all day for the men's fencing team against New York University, but with Brandeis trailing the Violets 13-12 he found himself behind three touches to one, and the team's chance for a UAA championship was slipping away.

Two fencers looking for redemption stole the show for the Brandeis men's and women's fencing teams at the NCAA Northeast Regionals at Harvard University Sunday, as Jeremy Simpson '06 and Eugene Vortsman '08 qualified for the NCAA Championships to take place in Houston, Texas on March 16-19, with fourth and fifth place overall finishes in the men's saber and men's foil events, respectively.

On an emotionally charged Saturday afternoon that marked the final career home meet for the men's and women's swimming and diving team's 10 seniors, the women emerged victorious over Worcester Polytechnic Institute 145-130, while the men dropped their final four races to lose 150-141.
