40 clubs may lose recognition

Over 40 student-run clubs were notified last January that they were in danger of being dechartered or derecognized because their leaders failed to submit mandatory club renewal forms to the Student Union by the Feb.


UCC plans environmental studies major

Students may be able to major in Environmental Studies beginning next fall, Ariel Strauss '07, the Union's representative to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, reported at a Union Senate meeting last month.


Study shows there are more Jews in America than previously thought

A new study by the University's Steinhardt Social Research Institute found that the number of American Jews may be as much as 20 percent higher than experts previously thought.The Institute's study, "Reconsidering the Size and Characteristics of the American Jewish Population," questions the methodology of past Jewish-population studies.


New theater group secures charter

Although the Free Play Theater Cooperative was denied a charter last semester due to a "duality of purpose" with existing clubs, the Student Union reversed its decision after the nascent group had a successful semester, distinguishing it from other theater groups on campus.FPTC artistic Director Josh Mervis '08 said Union senators requested that FPTC ask again for a charter allow the club to request money from the Finance Board.


Hadassah Institute hosts women's rights expert

Israeli women seeking to annul marriages are often at a disadvantage to their husbands, Ruth Halperin-Kaddari, a women's-rights expert, said in her keynote address for the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute's "Day of Learning on Women, Gender Equality and Jewish Law in Israel" Tuesday at the Women's Study Research Center.As part of a project on gender, culture, religion and law, the day focused on the difficulty Jewish Israeli women face in obtaining divorces.


Campus dining makes the switch to healthier cooking oil

CORRECTION APPENDED (SEE BELOW)In an effort to provide healthful dining choices, Aramark and Brandeis have worked together to ensure that foods are now fried in oil that does not contain trans-fatty acids, and the company is trying to offer more foods that do not contain unhealthy oils.
