WSOCCER: Squad suffers first loss of 2008

The women's soccer team was less than six minutes away from securing a tie against No. 25 Springfield College last Saturday, but Springfield rookie midfielder Jen Jahoda headed senior defender Delaney Cantrell's corner kick into the net in the 105th minute to give the Pride a 2-1 victory, ending the Judges' nine-match winning streak dating back to last season."We made a mistake defending," coach Denise Dallamora said.

After a rookie season in which forward Tiffany Pacheco '11 finished third on the team in scoring with four goals and a team-leading nine assists, she came into this season feeling even more comfortable with the team.


WSOCCER: Judges capture season opener

Just 28 minutes, 40 seconds into her college career, forward Izabella Miranda '12 collected her first assist on a goal by midfielder Sofia Vallone '11, giving the women's soccer team a 2-0 lead against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in their season-opening game.But that was just the beginning for the rookie, who scored the first goal of her college career less than 30 minutes later, which served as the final goal of the Judges' 4-0 victory over MIT."I was expecting to play [in the game] for a little bit but not as much as I played," said Miranda, who came off the bench in the 20th minute.

Seven run in ECACs

Competing for the first time in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championships at Springfield College last Friday, women's track team runner Beth Pisarik '10 didn't know what to expect.But despite her inexperience, Pisarik ran the 1500-meter race in 4 minutes, 49.06 seconds, better than her qualifying time of 4:51.04, placing 15th out of 31 runners."My goal was to run under 4:50, so I just made it," Pisarik said.


BREAKOUT ATHLETE: Tzlil Castel '08

After the 2006 season in which forward Tzlil Castel '08 started just two games and had no goals or assists, she led the women's soccer team with 10 goals in 2007, including both goals in the Judges' Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship victory as well as the lone goal in their ECAC semifinal win."I've always been a really hard worker," Castel said.
