Findings may lead to a new treatment for Parkinson's

Profs. Gregory Petsko and Dagmar Ringe (CHEM) are part of a group of scientists led by researchers at Columbia University that has discovered a new pathway in cells that influences the collection of specific proteins called polyamines, which is one of the "central characteristics of Parkinson's disease and probably causes the disease," said Petsko in an interview with the Justice.


Division of Finance and Administration reorganized after Jeffrey Apfel's resignation

Correction appendedAccording to a June 14 BrandeisNow press release the Division of Finance and Administration has been reorganized in the wake of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Apfel's resignation earlier this summer, with former Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Frances Drolette assuming the newly created role of senior vice president for finance and chief financial officer and former Vice President for Campus Operations Mark Collins filling the new position of senior vice President for administration.The press release explains that as a result of the reorganization, there will now be two distinct reporting lines to the president, one from the administrative side and one from the financial side.


Burt addresses new honorees

Prof. John Burt (ENG) gave the Phi Beta Kappa address to this year's inductees into the Brandeis chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at the induction ceremony held last Saturday in the Spingold Theater Center.


University rehires former administrator

Keenyn McFarlane, who had previously served as the assistant vice president and budget director for the Division of Students and Enrollment, has returned to Brandeis to serve as the vice president for enrollment, according to an e-mail to the Brandeis community from Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy.

At its meeting on Sunday night, the Student Union Senate swore in Savannah Pearlman '12 as elected Representative to the Alumni Association, Sofya Bronshvayg '11 as appointed Undergraduate Curriculum Committee Representative, and Julia Blanter '13 as an elected member of the Finance Board.Jenna Rubin '11 reported that the Senate has purchased a new domain name for its website, BrandeisStudentUnion.org, and hopes that the new domain name will help solve the problem of server listing.


Professors receive recognition

The Lerman-Neubauer '69 Prize for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring, the Michael L. Walzer '56 Award for Teaching and the Louis Dembitz Brandeis Prize for Excellence in Teaching were presented at last week's faculty meeting.
