Shapiro family donates $14.3M to rebuild the admissions building

University philanthropist Carl Shapiro has agreed to donate $14.3 million for the construction of a new admissions center to replace the current building, Brandeis administrators said.The current office will be torn down this spring, and construction will begin at the same location in July with the aim of opening the new center in summer 2009, administrators said.The building, originally called Morton May, was built in the 1950s and used for academic purposes, Dean of Student Life Rick Sawyer said.

Three women considered to be new Jewish chaplain

The search field for a new Jewish chaplain is narrowing, according to Associate Dean of Student Life Jamele Adams, who said he's in the midst of interviewing the top five candidates, three of whom are women.Adams has headed up the search with a committee of three students, faculty and administrators since Allan Lehmann departed last May for a position at Hebrew College in Newton.The committee isn't looking for a rabbi of a certain denomination, Adams said.The process began with a pool of more than 20 applicants, some local and some from as far away as California, who responded to an announcement and sent in their credentials.Nine applicants were selected from the original group.


Male attacked in Massell Quad

A male student was assaulted in Massell Quad Friday, Aug. 31, after refusing to unlock the door of a residence hall around midnight for an intruder outside, Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan said.
