Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez among four elected to National Baseball Hall of Fame

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America elected four players to the National Baseball Hall of Fame last Tuesday, enshrining pitchers Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz and second baseman Craig Biggio in Cooperstown. Each of the three pitchers selected easily surpassed the necessary 75 percent of votes needed in their first appearance on the ballot. Johnson, known as the “Big Unit” for his six foot, 10 inch frame, got 97.3 percent of the vote.


Inaugural College Football Playoff selects field

On Sunday afternoon, the selection committee for the inaugural College Football Playoff announced the four playoff teams.  The University of Alabama, the University of Oregon, Florida State University and The Ohio State University were all selected to the four-team tournament.  The tournament is the first of its kind after years of a one-game winner-takes-all championship.  For decades, fans have complained about the system that allows for only two teams to compete for the title.  The new playoff format was supposed to alleviate this issue by allowing four teams to have a chance, but this season has had many of the same concerns as before.
