Soboff accepts offer to play soccer overseas in Israel

Brandeis graduate and men’s soccer forward Michael Soboff ’15 has become just the second player in the university's history to play professional soccer.  The Framingham native recently signed with Hakoah Maccabi Amidar Ramat Gan FC of the Israeli Liga Alef South Division. The club is located in Ramat Gan, a city in the district of Tel Aviv, and was recently relegated to Liga Alef from Liga Leuimit, the second tier of the Israeli soccer system.

Head baseball coach chosen on Friday

Derek Carlson ’91 was announced as the new head coach of the men’s baseball team on Friday, succeeding Pete Varney and becoming the ninth baseball coach in university history.  Varney retired at the end of June following a 34-year career as head coach that included an astounding 700 career wins, 12 NCAA Tournament berths, one trip to the NCAA Division III World Series and one Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament title. Carlson joins the Judges on the heels of 13 years as the head coach of the Roger Williams University baseball team, where he earned an ECAC title and was named Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year four times, including following the 2014 season. Carlson compiled a 261-267-7 record during the course of his coaching tenure at Roger Williams but holds a 131-100 record in conference play against CCC opponents.

BRIEF Falkson earns conference Rookie of the Year honors for Judges

The  baseball team had two players named to the All-University Athletic Association Conference Team on May 8, highlighted by Rookie of the Year honors for shortstop Nick Falkson ’18. Falkson earned the Rookie of the Year honors by being named to the Second Team All-UAA squad, one of four first-years to be named to the team.  New York University freshman pitcher Matthew Millus and University of Rochester freshman infielder Tyler Schmidt were also named to a spot on the All-UAA Second Team. Falkson claimed the starting role at shortstop from the start of the season and went on to play in all 33 games this year.  The rookie led the team in most major offensive categories, posting a .373 batting average, a .453 slugging percentage and a .548 on base percentage.  Falkson posted a season-best and team-high 16 game hitting streak to begin the season that earned him All-UAA Tournament honors in early March. Falkson posted his best line in a 12-10 loss to Emory University on March 11, going 4-for-5 with a double and a walk while scoring a pair of runs.  He spent the majority of the year hitting in the number two spot, finishing second in runs scored (21) to outfielder Liam O’Connor ’16.  O’Connor, the Judges’ leadoff hitter, was the only other member of the squad to appear in all 33 games, scoring 24 runs and collecting 44 hits. Falkson also finished the year with a .921 fielding percentage and helped convert 21 of the Judges’ 28 double plays on the season.

BRIEF Pauri Pandian named regional assistant coach of the year

Pauri Pandian, the assistant coach for the men and women’s tennis teams, has been named the Division III Northeast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Brandeis athletics announced on its website on May 8.  This season marked the fourth of Pandian’s career in which he has worked under head coach Ben Lamanna.
