British Premier League teams struggle in opening round of European Champion League play

This week, the top four Barclays Premier League teams of the 2014 to 2015 season saw their first group stage action in the Champions League, and for everyone except the defending BPL champions, things did not go particularly well.  Chelsea FC was the only team that escaped with a positive result as Arsenal FC, Manchester City and Manchester United all fell in their first group games.  Manchester United and Manchester City both lost on Tuesday to Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven and Italian champions Juventus, respectively.  Arsenal lost on the road the next day to Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia while Chelsea defended Stamford Bridge with a win against Maccabi Tel Aviv.  United could not build on a slick goal from former PSV player Memphis Depay as Eindhoven initially drew level through Hector Moreno and took the lead for good on a header from Luciano Narsingh. Unfortunately, the main story of the match was the loss of Luke Shaw after a tackle by Moreno about 15 minutes into the first half.

Teams start off season strong at opening meet

The men and women’s cross country team started off its 2015 season this past Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational at Colt State Park in Rhode Island, hosted by Roger Williams University.  Both teams performed exceptionally in the five-kilometer run, as the men came in first out of 14 teams, while the women placed second out of 15 squads. The men and women both finished with a total of 40 points, and five of the top-17 finishes came from the Judges’ side.  The women’s team came up just short of capturing the title, falling to Wellesley College by 11 points.

Head baseball coach chosen on Friday

Derek Carlson ’91 was announced as the new head coach of the men’s baseball team on Friday, succeeding Pete Varney and becoming the ninth baseball coach in university history.  Varney retired at the end of June following a 34-year career as head coach that included an astounding 700 career wins, 12 NCAA Tournament berths, one trip to the NCAA Division III World Series and one Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament title. Carlson joins the Judges on the heels of 13 years as the head coach of the Roger Williams University baseball team, where he earned an ECAC title and was named Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year four times, including following the 2014 season. Carlson compiled a 261-267-7 record during the course of his coaching tenure at Roger Williams but holds a 131-100 record in conference play against CCC opponents.
