Figueroa ’98 reflects on baseball career

The women’s tennis team completed its fall season at the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Doubles Tennis Tournament last weekend, where two pairs of doubles rattled off perfect weekends. The meet, which lasted from Friday to Sunday, saw the pairs of Haley Cohen ’18 and Olivia Leavitt ’19 and Sophia He ’19 and Emily Eska ’16 turn in perfect weekends for the Judges. Cohen and Leavitt defeated counterparts from Simmons College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the tournament, shutting out the Simmons opponents 8-0 and topping the opposition from MIT by an 8-2 final. He and Eska were victorious over opponents from Amherst College and Colby College with 8-6 and 8-3 finals respectively.
■ Forward Evan Jastremski ’17 scored an overtime goal in the victory against the University of Chicago.
■ Shea Decker-Jacoby ’19 compiled 10 kills in a 3-1 loss against New York University on Sunday.
■ Zach Diamond ’18 finished in first place in the men’s 1000-yard freestyle race against Wheaton College.
■ Liam Garvey ’18 led the men’s side in the 8k race with a time of 25:56.2 for 23rd overall place.
■Midfielder Alec Spivack ’15 netted her second goal of the season against Case Western Reserve University on the road Sunday afternoon.
■ Midfielder Josh Ocel ’17 recorded two assists to lead the squad to a 2-1 victory over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.
■ Emily Bryson ’19 led the Judges to a third place finish for Division III competitors at the meet on Saturday afternoon in Boston.
The men’s tennis team started the weekend at Bates College in the Wallach Invitational. Going into this tournament, they looked to revive their lackluster season and make a serious run into the later rounds. The Judges got off to a slow start this season, making a small impact in the first tournament of the year at the Middlebury Invitational.
■ Libero Yvette Cho ’19 served five straight points, winning two with service aces against Colby College. on Saturday.
The National Hockey League season opened on Wednesday as the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks took on the New York Rangers and lifted their championship banner.
■ Midfielder Haliana Burhans ’18 scored in Saturday’s win against Lesley College.
■ Midfielder Jake Picard ’16 scored the game-winning goal for the team as they escaped in a double overtime victory last Wednesday.
■ Ryan Stender ’18 finished in fourth place overall to lead the Judges to victory on Saturday afternoon.
The men’s tennis team opened its Fall season last weekend at the Middlebury College Invitational with strong play in both singles and doubles action, sending three players to the tournament’s second day.
■ Maddie Engeler ’16 had four blocks in the Judges’ victory against Simmons College on Saturday.
This week, the top four Barclays Premier League teams of the 2014 to 2015 season saw their first group stage action in the Champions League, and for everyone except the defending BPL champions, things did not go particularly well. Chelsea FC was the only team that escaped with a positive result as Arsenal FC, Manchester City and Manchester United all fell in their first group games. Manchester United and Manchester City both lost on Tuesday to Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven and Italian champions Juventus, respectively. Arsenal lost on the road the next day to Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia while Chelsea defended Stamford Bridge with a win against Maccabi Tel Aviv. United could not build on a slick goal from former PSV player Memphis Depay as Eindhoven initially drew level through Hector Moreno and took the lead for good on a header from Luciano Narsingh. Unfortunately, the main story of the match was the loss of Luke Shaw after a tackle by Moreno about 15 minutes into the first half.
On Sept. 12, Brandeis eked out a dramatic double-overtime 1-0 win over top rival Babson College to give Head Coach Michael Coven his 500th career win.
