The Boston Bruins clinched the win over the Dallas Stars at the TD Garden on Thursday, March 30 to end the month with a fighting chance. The Bruins did not play an orderly game on Thursday, failing to execute clean plays and fumbling pucks over and over. Some of their poor moves allowed the Stars to gain some advantage in the first period.
The men’s and women’s tennis teams competed admirably against tough competition this past weekend. The men went 1-2 on the weekend with losses against Bowdoin College and Bates College and a victory over Wheaton College. The women’s side also picked up a victory against Wheaton on Sunday.
With the National Basketball Association season coming to a close, usual suspects such as the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs are the main teams in the championship discussion. However, other Eastern Conference teams have surprised the rest of the league as of late and are now also entering the discussion, including the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks and Washington Wizards.
The men’s baseball team has been unable to notch any wins lately, as it has only faced one team in the past few weeks, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers, to whom it lost 4-1.
The Judges took off at their first outdoor meet of the regular season, hosted by Bridgewater State University this past Saturday. The men poured in a number of top-10 finishes on the day, while the women took home multiple bronze medals in the non-scoring meet.
The Sacramento Kings might have hope. Yes, they absolutely made one of the worst deals in National Basketball Association history when they traded away franchise center DeMarcus Cousins for well below his value. Yes, their front office continues to be as big a wild card as exists in sports right now. But, maybe, despite the best efforts of owner Vivek Ranadive and General Manager Vlade Divac, the seeds for future competence are starting to sprout in some of their young players, highlighted by recently-acquired guard Buddy Hield.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament continued this past weekend with the Sweet 16. While the tournament has been both entertaining and surprising, this stage featured some of the best moments of March Madness thus far.
After four tries, the United States finally pulled off the ultimate win at the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday in Los Angeles, California. The United States played the dominant team from Puerto Rico and completely shut them out with a final score of 8-0 in the championship.
On Sunday, March 12, the men’s and women’s fencing teams competed at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Northeast Regional, hosted by Yale University. The women’s side was able to place two competitors into the final round of competition, foilists Joanne Carminucci ’19 and Jessica Gets ’20. The men’s team was unable to match the women’s excellence, but it did still manage to advance three saberists, two foilists and one epeeist to the semifinals of the meet.
The Brandeis Judges men’s and women’s tennis teams had a rough outing this past week against Middlebury College. The men lost in a 2-7 battle, while the women managed only one win in a difficult 8-1 thrashing.
This season in the NBA, Isaiah Thomas and the Boston Celtics have made a great name for themselves. The team has had a very strong presence on the floor, often leaving opposing players stunned by its impressive teamwork. Thomas, the 5’ 9” last pick of the second round in the 2011 draft, is now an All-Star and leading one of the best sports cities in the country to a second place seed in the Eastern Conference, behind Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He has a fantastic story and is now a truly exciting player to watch.
The least common of all National Basketball Association centers is the playmaker. Only a handful of these mystical beings exist, but when they do it’s a sight to behold. These players possess the unholy combination of big-man size, the skills of a six-footer and a knack for the creative. With shockingly solid handles, unexpectedly smooth jumpers and eyes in the back of their heads, the offense runs through these gods among men. Instead of looking to score when they get the ball in a half-court set, they look to facilitate the action, often getting the ball with pin-point precision to teammates curling on the wing or cutting to the rim. In a lineage that goes back to Bill Walton and Arvydas Sabonis, the torch of the playmaking center has been carried proudly for the past half decade by Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol. While other excellent players like Al Horford, Joakim Noah and Pau Gasol are also models of this kind of center, only Marc Gasol has finished in the top four of all centers in both assist percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio in every one of the past five seasons. Statistically, the younger Gasol is putting up a career year, but his reign as the gold standard of playmaking centers is facing an unprecedented challenge. The challenger? NBA twitter and hipster darling Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic.
Thursday and Friday were days full of promise for many. On Thursday, everything went according to plan, as the only upsets were from 12th-seeded Middle Tennessee State University and 11th-seeded Xavier University knocking out the University of Minnesota and the University of Maryland, respectively. On Friday, highly favored Southern Methodist University was upset by the University of Southern California in the last seconds of the game.
The baseball team got on track with its first win of the season this week to put its record at 1-4 overall.
The men’s and women’s tennis teams played three matches over the weekend, going 2-1 overall. The women came away with two blowout wins, while the men struggled in their lone match against New York University, falling 6-3.
In the softball regular season opener, the Judges took a trip to Framingham, Massachusetts to play the Framingham State University Rams, losing in a rather slow game for the squad.
Emily Bryson ’19 continued her outstanding season representing the Judges, placing this past weekend at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships.
One of the most interesting subplots of this excellent National Basketball Association season has been the race for the eighth seed in the Western Conference.
The men’s basketball team posted a 1-2 record over break, winning their final game of the season. Closing out the month with a win against New York University, the team bookended the tough month of February with victories and punched in their final overall record at 8-16.
The women’s basketball team wrapped up its season on Feb. 25 with a victory over New York University, snapping a five game losing streak. The previous weekend, the Judges fell to Washington University in St. Louis 61-49 and to the University of Chicago 69-66.
