On Jan. 15, 66,277 fans were wearing black and orange in Las Vegas,according to SBNation. This was surprising because Las Vegas is home to the Raiders, but more than half the fans were rooting for the Cincinnati Bengals to win in this playoff game. 

Ferrari’s 2022 challenger, a potential title-winning formula?

It’s been safe to say that Ferrari has not seen much success in Formula One recently. With their last champion Kimi Räikkönen having retired at the end of the 2021 season, the Formula One grid has lost its last driver who won a championship with the prancing horses all the way back in 2007. The team that once dominated the sport at the hands of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher hasn’t won a drivers’ or constructors’ championship since 2007 and 2008, respectively. Since then, the team has come close to winning a championship — most notably of these almost-victories include Felipe Massa’s in 2008 and Fernando Alonso’s in 2012, both of whom missed out on a championship with Ferrari in the final race of the season. 

Women's basketball loses by one to the Bears

Last Thursday, the Brandeis women’s basketball team lost to Bridgewater State University 73-74. This loss means the Judges have a four-game losing streak and fall to 4-4 overall this season. 

Brandeis wins the Big 4 Challenge over weekend

The Brandeis men’s basketball team overcame Babson College and Tufts University, the latter won after a gruelling five overtime game, to win the Big Four Challenge. The Friday, Dec. 3 game against Babson saw the Judges start Dylan Lien ’23, Collin Sawyer M.A. ’22, Sam Nassar ’22, Nolan Hagerty ’22 and Toby Harris ’25. The Judges and the Babson Beavers remained relatively even throughout the first half, as neither team were able to cement themselves on offence and build up a rhythm. On some possessions, the Judges were able to pass the ball effectively to find open shooters at the 3-point line or cut towards the basket and draw a foul. Despite being a first-year, Harris was given the starting job and a significant amount of shots. Although he is a forward, he is able to stretch the floor and take pressure in the paint away from cutters. Harris almost always got a touch in every offensive set and was given the green light to shoot seven 3-pointers in both the Babson and Tufts games. 

All-deaf high school football team goes undefeated

The California School for the Deaf, Riverside’s Varsity football team, the Cubs, is undefeated and the highest ranking team in their Southern California Division, according to Men’s Health. They are currently 11 and 0 in this season, and have won each game by multiple touchdowns,  according to NBC Los Angeles. Communication between all the coaches, plates and other staff members is through American Sign Language.

Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, tested positive for COVID-19 after he declared that he was immunized prior to the start of the season. 

Judges Fall in Second Round

 The Brandeis Judges women’s team qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament after concluding their regular season 11–4–2,  4–3 University Athletic Association. The Judges faced the Farmingdale State Rams, ranked #20, for the first round and the #8 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers for the second. 

Mercedes Strike Back in Thrilling São Paulo Grand Prix

The 2021 São Paulo Grand Prix saw Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes strike back against Red Bull as they aimed to regain lost ground in the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship. Mercedes and Hamilton entered Brazil with a one-point lead in the Constructors Championship and a 19 point deficit in the Drivers' Championship and entered a track that many thought to be a venue where Red Bull were expected to thrive. Interlagos is also known as a circuit where overtaking is easy and the effect of the Drag Reduction System is powerful. Drivers can use the sequence of corners known as Junção out of turn 12 down the main straight into the S do Senna (turns one and two) to overtake. Because of these characteristics, Mercedes decided to replace Hamilton’s engine and incurred a five-place penalty for the race on Sunday. This meant that while he can participate in qualifying on Friday and the sprint race on Saturday, he will have to start five places behind wherever he finishes in the sprint race for the race on Sunday.

Atlanta Braves win World Series 4-2

The Atlanta Braves are the 2021 World Series champions after a 7-0 win against the Houston Astros in Game 6. This was the Braves first World Series title in 26 years, which is also the last time that Atlanta has won a championship in any sport. According to the Braves manager Brian Snitker, “Everybody that’s in the World Series right now is gassed, everybody and both teams, all the players. It’s been a long year.” The Braves returned to Atlanta leading the series 3-2. 

Former NFL wide receiver kills person in high-speed car crash

Former Raiders Player Henry Ruggs III was speeding at 156 mph when he rear-ended another car, as reported to NPR by prosecutors in Las Vegas. Las Vegas resident Tina O. Tintor, age 23, was killed. The accident took place in a residential area several miles west of the Las Vegas strip at 3:39 a.m. this past Tuesday, according to ESPN.   

Judges Sweep Away to Close Out

The Brandeis Judges finished off their season in the best way possible, winning both the men’s and women’s games against New York University. The women’s team entered the game against NYU with a record of 10–4–2, 3–3 University Athletic Association, ranked #20 in the country. The men’s team came in with a record of 5–7–3, 2–2–2 in the UAA.

The Formula 1 World Championship returned to Mexico City after a pandemic-induced 1-year hiatus, as the battle between reigning champion Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen continued in Mexico’s bustling capital city. 

The NBA’s new foul rules and how they are changing the game

Prior to the start of the 2021-2022 NBA season, the league enacted new rules targeting abnormal movement by the offensive player in an attempt to draw fouls. Before this season, foul rules were generally designed to benefit and protect the offensive player, as excessive contact by a defender with a shooter could result in the player landing on the defender’s feet as they come down from a jump shot, which has resulted in severe ankle and foot injuries. Most notably, in the 2017 Western Conference Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors, Kawhi Leonard landed on Zaza Pachulia’s foot as he was coming down from a shot, which caused him to aggravate an already injured ankle. Kawhi’s injury, among others, prompted the league to take action and provided strong initiative to protect players while  implementing various measures to dissuade defenders from having too much contact with a shooter. 

Judges sweep last weekend's games

The Brandeis Judges men’s and women’s Soccer teams both hosted at Gordon Field for their last home games of the season. Sunday’s games marked Senior Day, with it being the last time the seniors will step onto the field. With two University Athletic Association games up for grabs, the weekend marked an instrumental opportunity for the women’s team to secure a place in the tournament. For the men, it was a way to close out in style. The women’s team entered with a record of 8–4–2, 1–3 UAA and the men with 4–7–2 and 1–2–1 UAA.

MLB veteran speaks to Brandeis’ baseball team

On Friday, Oct. 22, former New York Yankee Willie Randolph spoke via Zoom to the Brandeis Baseball team. In 1975, the Pittsburgh Pirates traded Randolph to the New York Yankees where he spent 13 of his 18 seasons as a player, according to the MLB Player Profile. Besides the Yankees and the Pirates, Randolph spent some time playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland A’s and the Milwaukee Brewers before ending his distinguished playing career with the New York Mets in 1992. As a player, he was a six-time All-Star and a two-time World Series Champion. In 2004, Randolph was named the manager of the Mets for the upcoming 2005 season, joining the ranks of Gil Hodges, Yogi Berra and Joe Torre, among others who played for and later managed the team.

Max Verstappen Wins Dramatic US Grand Prix

After taking pole position on Saturday, Max Verstappen put on a show Sunday to convert his pole into a win in this year’s United States Grand Prix which was held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX. After missing the race altogether in 2020 due to the pandemic, Formula 1 returned to the United States in the midst of a championship battle between defending champion Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. 

Judges win at home and away

The Brandeis Women’s soccer team took a break from the University Athletic Association to play two non-conference games. Facing Bridgewater State University at home and Springfield College away, it was an opportunity to improve their record and inch towards qualifying for the NCAA tournament. The women’s team came into the week with a 6-4-2 record and a 1-3 for the UAA conference. 

Judges take one, lose one away over weekend

The Brandeis Judges Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams flew to the Midwest to play the University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis. Two University Athletic Association games were up for grabs as both the men’s and women’s soccer teams faced top 25 ranked teams. The women’s team faced the #9 University of Chicago and #3 Washington University teams, coming in with a record 5-3-2 and 0-2 UAA. On the other hand, the men’s team with a record of 3-6-2, 0-1-1 UAA faced the #16 University of Chicago and #9 Washington University teams.
