As graduation draws near, I would hate to depart this special community with unshared feelings. With the intention of originally molding my thoughts into a commencement speech, I’ve turned to writing this Op-Ed as a reflection on my past four years as a scholar, peer and champion of our university.

justFeatures: Let’s start at the beginning. What inspired you to accept the presidency back in 2010 after Jehuda Reinharz had first stepped down?

After two years of study and debate, Brandeis University’s Exploratory Committee on Fossil Fuel Divestment has released its Final Report and Recommendations. The committee found, among other conclusions, that “By divesting, Brandeis can…[use] its position of authority as a mechanism for social change and political persuasion.” We wholeheartedly agree.
The University’s Exploratory Committee on Fossil Fuel has released its final report on fossil fuel divestment, according to an email sent to the community on Friday by President Frederick Lawrence and Provost Lisa Lynch. The report recommended socially-responsible investing as a leading option for achieving the University’s carbon-footprint objectives.
David Kertzer Ph.D. ’74 won a Pulitzer Prize in biography for his recent book “The Pope and Mussolini: The Secret History of Pius XI and the Rise of Fascism in Europe.”
