Last Thursday, students and administrators gathered in the Admissions Presentation Room for a round table discussion on the University’s on-campus initiatives. During the event, the group discussed an upcoming sexual assault climate survey and stressed the need for administrative transparency and complainant anonymity when the University handles student complaints.
On Feb. 9, Rebecca Tillar began her role as Title IX investigator and compliance officer.
The Psychological Counseling Center has added volunteer student representative positions to its team as a part of a greater initiative to improve outreach to the Brandeis community. Emily Kurtz ’15, Anna Grandis ’17 and Leah Friend ’17 are currently serving in these roles.

WHO RUNS THE WORLD? GIRLS: The Solar Winds Quartet performed this weekend in a concert featuring works solely composed by female composers at the Slosberg Music Center.
The Rose Art Museum’s newest Collection in Focus features pieces from artist Jennie C. Jones, who visited Brandeis on Thursday. Jones is known for her work in modern art, in which she incorporates multimedia to create canvas paintings, sculptures and other instrumental works. Her work “Vertical Into Decrescendo (2014)” is hanging in the Mildred S. Lee Gallery along with pieces from the Rose’s collection and the Robert D. Farber Archives & Special Collections.
Each Tuesday and Thursday night for the last two years, a group of students have gotten together at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center to take some time off from homework and exercise.

Last Friday, University President Frederick Lawrence announced his resignation. Lawrence will step down in June and depart for Yale University, where he will be a senior research scholar and a teacher. The president began his term nearly five years ago on Jan. 1, 2011. Notable events during his tenure include the reopening of the Rose Art Museum and the Linsey Pool , the cessation of the University’s partnership with Al-Quds University and the Ayaan Hirsi Ali honorary degree scandal. In a campus-wide email, Lawrence noted, “Applications have surged to an all-time high, our endowment had grown to its highest point ever, and we have made significant progress in balancing the University’s budget.” What qualities should the University consider when searching for the next President?
On Wednesday evening, students and faculty gathered to discuss the impact of social justice in education during “What Does Social Justice Mean in Modern Education,” which took place as part of ’DEIS Impact.
The women’s basketball team played two University Athletic Conference games this weekend, losing one and winning the other. In a rematch of last weekend’s contests against the University of Rochester and Emory University, the Judges beat Rochester 60-52 Sunday afternoon after losing to Emory on 67-61 on Friday evening. Brandeis’ record now stands at 11-9 overall and 3-6 in UAA play.

JADED: The magazine, due out later this semester, will feature creative writing and art by members of the Brandeis community to channel emotions in an artistic way.
If you have ever been to North Carolina, then you have been to a state that once held the name “Klansville, U.S.A.” Nicknamed “Klansville” for its overwhelming Ku Klux Klan membership, North Carolina became a state whose Klan population surprisingly outnumbered those in all the other southern states combined.
On Jan. 7, two gunmen, Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, attacked the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical magazine, in response to their cartoons that depicted the Prophet Muhammad. The attacks killed 12, including the magazine’s editor and cartoonists and a police officer.
I am a senior at Brandeis University, grateful for the privilege to study in Waltham for three and a half years to date. At first, I was hesitant to join the Brandeis community—I never visited before arriving (late) for orientation my first year and did not bother attending most of the “mandatory” orientation programming.
