On April 18, 2024 Brandeis alumni received emails from Brandeis Alumni Relations, notifying recipients that the University will be eliminating former students’ official Brandeis emails, effective Jan. 7, 2025. This news was paired with the announcement of the University's launch of My Brandeis Gateway, an online platform designed to help alumni to stay connected to the Brandeis community. In response to the University’s decision, alumni have been circulating a petition to keep their official Brandeis emails.

On Nov. 10, the Student Union had their weekly 7 p.m. meeting. The meeting started with a presentation from Brandeis Rebelle, a multicultural dance group seeking probationary status as a club. Rebelle’s mission is to empower students through dance and cultural expression and, in doing so, foster inclusivity on campus. Brandeis Rebelle plans to focus on community engagement and planning events such as multicultural dance workshops open to all students. The club was granted probationary status.

After the Boston Celtics won the 2024 National Basketball Association Championship this past June, all eyes are on the team as they are expected to dominate the upcoming season once more. Given that no team has won back-to-back championships since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018, it will be no easy feat to replicate the historic season the Celtics had last year. Of course, the preseason does not count towards anything, but it is a time to see if players have improved over the summer. The preseason also allows younger players to have the opportunity to show coaches that they can provide beneficial talent and depth to the roster.

On Nov. 7, the Brandeis Jewish Bund hosted a Study-in For Palestine from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A promotional poster for the event encouraged students to “Join the Jewish Bund as we sit and study in honor of Palestine.” The event, which was attended by a small crowd of students, took place on the first floor of Farber library, around the corner from Starbucks. Organizers offered pro-Palestine reading material for attendees, though most chose to silently do their own work.

It was a bittersweet end to the 2024 soccer season on Saturday, Nov. 9. The women’s team lost their seventh and final game of the season to University Athletics Association opponent New York University. Of their seven losses, six were disappointing defeats at the hands of UAA rivals.

It was nearly 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 7 — the last chance for eligible Georgia voters to register for the 2024 November election. Jimena Martinez-Dominguez ’25 had already been registered to vote, but anxiety surrounding absentee voting lingered as she sank into a black faux leather couch.

The Brandeis campus has been buzzing with election preparation all semester, as students have gathered to watch debates, register to vote and discuss policies. Many students are passionate about their beliefs, and the election has made its way into class offerings, club programming and more.

On Nov. 5, 2024, people around the U.S. cast their vote to elect the next president. By the time polling sites opened, approximately 80 million people had already voted early. Polling in many states has shown Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Donald Trump at nearly an even percentage throughout the day, particularly in the battleground states.

Both the Brandeis men’s and women’s soccer teams played conference games against the Case Western Reserve University Spartans last Sunday, Nov 3. The men’s team won 2-1 — their second-straight conference win after defeating Rochester University 3-2 the week before. The women’s team tied the Spartans 1-1. Their equalizing goal came from Dominique Paglia ’25 in the 25th minute off a shot just outside the goalie box. It was her first goal of the year and the third of her career. Case Western should have had more momentum in the second half, as they were playing the end of the game with an additional player after an 86th-minute red card against the Judges, but they were ultimately unable to capitalize. Keeper Rachel Ross M’25 kept the Judges tied with six saves, her third highest mark of the season. With the tie, the women’s team moves to 9-6-1 and 0-5-1 in conference play. Heading into their final game, Rachel Walter ’25 leads the team with 20 points based on total assists recorded and goals scored with eight and six, respectively. Tanvi Raju ’27 holds the high mark for goals scored with seven.

The 120th Major League Baseball World Series concluded on Wednesday Oct. 30 with an impressive win for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Facing off against the New York Yankees, the Dodgers secured a commanding victory as the series concluded 4-1. The Dodgers dominated the first three games, winning the first 6-3 and the second and third 4-2. The Yankees bounced back in game four with a decisive 11-4 win, however, the Dodgers denied any real attempt for a comeback during an extremely tight game five, clinching the series with a score of 7-6.

Today anti Zionist Jews and other liberal Jews wrap themselves in “ tikkun olam” (“ repair the world”) credulously believing that they have wrapped themselves in historic Judaism. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dismissing Jewish law and replacing it with a universalist “ social justice” agenda, many of these “repair the world” Jews are even able to contort themselves into supporting Hamas whose unrevoked charter in Article 7 requires every supporter of Hamas to murder every Jew on earth.

On Oct. 21 at 7:00 p.m., the new student organization Jewish Bund at Brandeis held a vigil in the Shapiro Campus Center atrium for the lives lost in Palestine and Lebanon over the past year. A post on their Instagram page asked attendees to “come in the spirit of respect, love, and community.”

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, the Hadassah Brandeis Institute and Brandeis Hillel co-hosted Prof. Vanessa Ochs, a professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia. The talk, taking place in the Usdan International Lounge, centered on Och’s research on new Jewish rituals in Israel and the diaspora in response to ongoing war. “These new rituals do not answer Jewish theological questions, and Jewish ritual never does,” Professor Ochs explained. “Rituals provide answers to [the questions]: Who are my people? Are there others who know how I feel? How do I go on? Who knows what I’ve been through? How can I tell this story?”

On Oct. 7, Brandeis University was named in a class action lawsuit, accused of conspiring with 39 other top universities and the College Board in price-fixing. The suit was filed with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and alleges the defendants’ “concerted action” has caused the price of tuition to increase for students with non-custodial parents — a parent who does not have primary custody of their child after a divorce or separation.

Resilience is the story of the Brandeis men’s soccer team this year. Fighting back from a slow start, the Judges have kept their heads above water against opponents in the University Athletics Association conference. This past weekend they displayed their typical tendency for a tenacious and unrelenting defense of their just barely winning record. Their first match against Emory University was less than exciting for the Judges in a match that left much to be desired from both teams, but their second showing versus the University of Rochester was a thrilling showdown between two teams vying for a winning conference record.

Weeks seven and eight in the National Football League continued to showcase the league’s parity, reinvigorating the notion that no win is an easy one. As of week eight, the Kansas City Chiefs are the league’s only undefeated squad, boasting a 7-0 record. Additionally, every single team has won a game this season and the only teams that have not reached multiple victories are the Tennessee Titans and lowly Carolina Panthers. The road to playoff contention in the NFL is notoriously fierce and difficult, so it will be incredibly exciting to tune in for the remaining weeks of the regular season as teams jostle for playoff position.
