Marty Fassler and I co-edited the paper in 1964-65. Those were frenetic times on campus, capping a four-year battle with the founding president, Abram Sachar. Everyone with eyes and ears – including the keen reporters and writers for the JUSTICE – saw that the University was in full conformist mode. The liberal and even radical policies at the immediate postwar origins of our school, which sheltered exiled European intellectuals and domestic talent that found no other comfortable home, were “transiting” to the flabby mediocrity of a place that no longer wished to be identified as a leader in social criticism, literature, history of ideas, or left-wing writing of any kind. Sachar instead turned his aging head to the emerging neo-liberal norms epitomized by JFK: style over substance, a subdued and barely visible allegiance to racial justice, misogyny masked as “Camelot”. Sachar wanted a campus that would become quiescent in the intellectual , the moral, and the political sense. He had already fired Kathleen Gough Aberle, a feminist and rising academic star who publicly supported Fidel Castro over Sachar’s darling JFK during the “Cuban missile crisis” of 1962. He had put teeth in the absurd parietal rules that (unsuccessfully) kept boy from girl in the Castle and other campus trysting spots; he had contemplated censoring the JUSTICE itself and had to be subdued by that hardly radical thinker, Max Lerner (so went the rumor: it might have been John Roche who managed to make Sachar see the light on this occasion).

After opening locations in San Diego and Chicago, WNDR (pronounced as “wonder”), a chain of interactive art museums, opened its doors in downtown Boston, inviting student journalists to explore and document its 21 exhibits on April 3. These exhibits combine artistry with breakthrough technology, shifting reality through unique lighting and sound techniques to immerse visitors within their respective themes. WNDR enlisted independent artists as well as its own creative team to generate these interactive attractions.
From its inception, the Folk Festival is a Brandeis tradition that has amazed audiences and impacted the future of folk music while still honoring the past. The first festival in 1963 was at the Ullman Amphitheater, Brandeis’ outdoor theater that existed until the 1980s, and it included iconic performers like Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, The Lilly Brothers — who were credited for bringing bluegrass to New England — the “Mother of Folk,” Jean Ritchie as well as other famous voices. This year’s festival happened in conjunction with the Create@Brandeis Craft Market at the Sherman Function Hall on The Festival of the Arts’ “Super Sunday” from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. As the musicians were playing, you could hear vendors discussing their products with customers and see children running around, playing on the colorful inflatable shapes set up for seating. The unity and love of the Brandeis creative community felt palpable in that room.

At any Broadway show, the rustling of programs is a familiar sound. Audiences read cast member biographies, excited to learn about their past performances and accomplishments. These paragraphs are commonly littered with impressive resumes, but in some cases, the one most read looks a little different than the rest.
Back in September, Maggie Shealy M’25 didn’t even know if she would choose to fence this year. Fast forward to March 19, 2024, Shealy arrived at a Sheraton Hotel in Columbus, Ohio without any running water for her last competition of the year. Three days later, she was a National Collegiate Athletic Association Champion in women’s saber fencing.
In January 2022, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Board of Governors updated the “transgender student-athlete participation policy” that governs the rules and regulations in the world of college sports. This updated policy puts NCAA student-athlete participants in line with the Olympic Movement, which outlines an approach that is different from sport to sport. This approach “preserves opportunity for transgender student-athletes while balancing fairness, inclusion and safety for all who compete,” according to the NCAA website.

Now that housing selection for the 2024-25 school year has passed, Brandeis students may be wondering what the next year will look like depending on where they’re living. This week, the board would like to provide the student body with an honest take on what the available housing options are like, as well as some advice for rising sophomores. A lot of housing options on campus are not always as bad as people say.
For the last two years, the student-run Instagram meme page @brandeis.chungles, commonly referred to as just “Chungles,” has graced the Brandeis community with memes relating to campus life behind a veil of anonymity. Displayed in the account's bio was the message “Face reveal at 1,000 followers.” The masterminds behind the memes would be revealed when that threshold was met.
The Irish musician and singer-songwriter Hozier recently released a new extended play entitled “Unheard” as an extension to his August album “Unreal Unearth.” The poem Dante’s Inferno inspired “Unreal Unearth” and takes the listener through the circles of hell: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery. Hozier revealed that over the pandemic he was hard at work making songs for this next album. Ultimately, he decided on 16 songs for the album, with one additional song, “Through Me (The Flood),” featured only on the “Eat Your Young” EP. This new EP, “Unheard,” features songs that were originally going to be on “Unreal Unearth” but were unable to make the original release.
Every year, the Women’s Studies Research Center and the Department of Music hold the “Alfredo & Demitra DiLuzio Annual Concert.” Rosalie Repaldi Shane ’66, started the concert series in honor of her aunt and uncle who raised her and her brother after they were orphaned. Her aunt, Demitra was a dramatic soprano, and her uncle, Alfredo was a music teacher. When they passed away, Rosalie and her brother started an endowment for concerts in their honor.
The Justice published its first issue in March 1949, a six-page spread telling the stories of the very first year at Brandeis. Page five held a column created by Sports editor at the time, Lou Lindauer.
The National Football League landscape is experiencing a dramatic upheaval as the curtain came down on another exciting season. Teams are adjusting their rosters and planning for the next season with the flurry of deals and retirements. The bombshell deal of star running back Derrick Henry going to the Baltimore Ravens, which sent shockwaves through the football world, is one of several headlines that are dominating the offseason buzz.
