The Albert Einstein Society has selected Stanley Deser, the Ancell Professor of Physics, Emeritus, along with Charles Misner of the University of Maryland, to receive the prestigious Einstein Medal for their work on Einstein’s theory of general relativity, according to a Jan. 14 BrandeisNOW press release.

Let’s take Baghdad together.” So expresses the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in one of the group’s many online recruitment videos. This call to fight has resonated with people from all around the world as the Islamic State calls Muslims to serve Allah. Unlike its predecessors, the Islamic State pervades the Internet and therefore possesses the ability to grow its cult-like terrorist organization at an exponential speed. According to Adrian Furnham, a professor of psychology at the University College London and the Norwegian Business School, the majority of cults begin by inducting members and remaking them as one of them. This evolution begins the second someone hits play.

In recent weeks, Brandeis students have raised their voices along with countless others across the country in protest of the police killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, and the subsequent lack of grand jury indictment for each of their killers, who were both police officers. Brown and Garner have become symbols of the many other black men and women in America killed by unnecessary police violence.

The semester is winding down, and work is ramping up. Once finals end, though, you’ll have earned a much-deserved break. The nominations for the 2015 Grammy Awards were released on Friday. This gives you ample time between the end of finals and when the show airs on Feb. 8 to brush up on your music knowledge. Since this is my last column for now, as I will be abroad in Dublin next semester, this Grammy guide is my goodbye present to you.

Many artistically-minded students choose Brandeis for its breadth of theater opportunities, performances and productions. Brandeis Ensemble Theater’s production of Quickies, a series of student-written one-act plays and sketches, definitely falls into these ideas of opportunites and inclusive theater productions.

Aaron Fischer ’15 writes, acts and directs for the Undergraduate Theatre Collective and loves watching Woody Allen films. He has participated in a handful of Brandeis clubs, ranging from Swing Club to Debate Society. He often wears a purple shirt.

The concert started with a loud cry of poetry from Faith Conant as she beat on the lead drum, prompting the rest of the group to join in on their instruments. Playing on drums and other percussion instruments in a semi-circle were the students from Conant’s “Fafali: Music and Dance from Ghana” class, joined by a few special guests. As the first piece, “Gahu” went on, beats reverberated off the walls of the hall, filling the whole room with powerful, intense rhythms.

The Boston Bruins welcomed two of the NHL’s top teams to TD Garden this past week and were on opposite ends of shutouts against the St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens. The Bruins netted a pair of goals in a 2-0 victory over the Blues last Tuesday, but were shut out by the same score when goaltender Carey Price and the Canadeins came to Boston on Saturday afternoon. The team was also on the road Friday night, when they defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in a hard-fought affair, 4-3.

Last Thursday, the Faculty Senate announced that Students Taking Action Now in Darfur had presented an electronics policy procurement change and received 13 votes in favor of Brandeis implementing policies opposing using conflict minerals in electronics. STAND at Brandeis is one of many college groups which have joined the Conflict-Free Campus Initiative that fights against the use of conflict minerals. This board applauds STAND in organizing students and beginning to implement changes to address this global problem.
