Recordings reveal new insight into life of Univ. alum Abbie Hoffman

(10/08/19 10:00am)

University alumnus Abbie Hoffman ’59 was a radical social activist, political organizer, drug dealer, conspiracist, rioter, author, FBI suspect and 1960s counterculture icon. Additionally, he was the first male cheerleader on the Brandeis cheerleading team, a fact only recently brought to light in a series of audio recordings that were donated to the Robert D. Farber University Archives and Special Collections by documentarian Keith Armonaitis.

Spotlight On the Rose

(09/24/19 10:00am)

This fall, the Rose Art Museum has a new exhibit called Into Form. Bringing together a large variety of different pieces, including works done on paper, sculptures and videos, Into Form creates an interesting dynamic between geometric and abstract works which makes walking around the museum an interesting experience.

Into the (Sachar) Woods

(09/17/19 10:00am)

At first glance, Brandeis may seem like a concrete jungle. However, just beyond the main confines of campus is a green space accessible to the community. It doesn’t matter if you’re not an Environmental Studies major or active member of the Mountain Club — the Sachar Woods provide an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors regardless of experience level.

A love letter to Hollywood, and more

(09/10/19 10:00am)

A Quentin Tarantino movie without five hundred gallons of fake blood and eight flashbacks in a row? Now you have it. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is Tarantino’s ninth movie, written and directed by himself. Set in 1960s Los Angeles, the film tells the story of washed-up actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff Booth, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt respectively, who struggle to survive in a changing world. At the same time, the rising star Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) just moved into the area with her husband and is familiarizing herself with the town.

Men’s soccer season opener results in a win

(09/03/19 10:00am)

As classes and a new academic year began, soccer, too, was  in the air. The Brandeis men’s soccer team began their season with a split of their first two games — they won their first match on opening day against Roger Williams University, but suffered a loss that day against Washington and Lee University. The two games were hard fought and close throughout, with each game being decided by a single goal.

Democratic debate reflection: each candidate's performance, graded

(07/08/19 1:00pm)

With the first democratic primary debates behind us, each candidate will be pressing to spin their performance favorably, no matter how middling, lackluster or even self-evidently superb their performance may have been. Now that the campaign is underway and candidates are being scrutinized by voters and moderators alike, I will be sharing my own post-debate takeaways. The ranking system is based on who did the most to improve their chances and — especially for the lesser known candidates — get their name out.

Team shows off young talent with three wins

(04/16/19 10:00am)

The Brandeis baseball team inched even closer to a 0.500 overall win-loss record after earning three solid victories this week. The Judges are now 12–13 for the season and gaining momentum as they head into the final 13 games of this season. Among the final set of games, eight will be against University Athletic Conference foes New York University and Case Western Reserve University, when the Judges will have a great opportunity to improve their conference record, currently 0–8.

MLB superstars Nolan Arenado, Bryce Harper and Manny Machado get their contracts signed

(03/05/19 11:05am)

Major League Baseball has recently been at the top of the sports headlines with massive contracts being signed by three of the sport’s biggest stars: Nolan Arenado, Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. These deals are, in total, worth about $1 billion dollars — a sum unrivaled by any of the other other major American professional sports organizations. In an era of astronomical television deals being signed by just about every team, franchises have more cash to spend on free-agents and contract extensions to retain current players. These television deals have increased revenue for the sport by 257 percent from the period between 1995 to 2013. Whether or not these contracts are justified is a matter of debate, but what is clear are the new expectations that the market has created, as explained in a 2013 sabr.org article.

A 217–77 defeat dropped the women’s team to an overall record to 2–7. Despite the tough loss suffered by both teams, each team had some swimmers that shined individually and put up dominating performances.
