Athlete of the Week: Luke Teece '12
In the 3rd minute of last Sunday's game against Emory University, men's soccer midfielder Luke Teece '12 scored the Judges' only goal in a 1-1 draw. The goal came in a moment of confusion for the opponent as Emory sophomore defenseman Alex Scott attempted to pass the ball back to the goalkeeper only to find his pass intercepted by Teece, who chipped the ball into the goal for a score.
"I was able to get up a little bit on some miscommunication," Teece said. "Their defender was playing the ball back to the goalie thinking I wasn't close, . and I was able to sneak up. I don't think either one of them noticed how close I was to the play."
Teece leads the team with eight goals and 18 points on the season. Before Sunday's game against Emory, Teece scored the lone goal in the team's win against University of Rochester Oct. 9.
Last season, Teece scored only a single goal and recorded three assists. In his first year on the team in 2008, he did not score a single goal and ended the year with three assists.
This season, however, Teece has developed not only an ability to score but also has demonstrated considerable poise while on the field.
"I feel like there's not as much pressure this year," he said. "I think that helped build a confidence level that I just didn't have the past two seasons."
Teece is able to notice improvement in his game since he stared playing for the Judges.
"I've had a lot of opportunities, but for whatever reason, they didn't fall," he said. "The weight of not scoring built up to the point where I had no self confidence. But this year, [the opportunities] have fallen."
The men's soccer team plays its final home game this Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Springfield College.
