The golf team started its spring season last weekend, finishing sixth out of 18 teams at the University of Massachusetts at Darmouth Hampton Inn Invitational. The team ended with a 83-over-par 659. Charles Sacks '11 led the squad, finishing with a team-best 18-over-par 162, finishing 17th of 93 golfers.

"I've been making good contact," Sacks said. "I have a smooth swing, but I still think there's a lot of room for improvement, like focusing on not trying to force things, getting the ball in the hole and making birdies."

Coach Bill Shipman was pleased with Sacks' performance in the tournament.

"He parred one of the hardest holes on the whole course, No. 12, that got him going a bit," Shipman said. "He's been hitting the ball very well. He's been playing well. It didn't show the first day; he had a bad hole or two, but [on the second day], his score matched his level of play," said Shipman.

Lee Bloom '10 and Aaron Cusato '12 tied for 25th overall, shooting a 20-over-par 164. Scott Beaulac '12 finished 38th with a 25-over-par 169, while Kyle Managan '12 finished 82nd with a 40-over-par 184.

All squad members except Cusato improved their scores on the second day. The largest improvement came from Sacks, who improved his score from a 14-over-par 86 to a 10-over-par 76. Overall, the team finished the day with a 50-over-par 321.

"Team-wise, it was really great that we all put together a great second day," Bloom said. "Coming off winter break, it was good to come off of solid ground."

Despite the team not performing as well on the first day of competition, Bloom was still impressed with the Judges' play.

"We were very consistent. No one had a big number, and we were very fortunate we did not need a great number on day one to keep us in contention," he said.

On the first day, facing tough weather conditions, Brandeis finished the day with a 73-over-par 338, which, despite being somewhat high, was still one of the better numbers of the day.

"The course played tough on Saturday," Shipman said. "It was windy, the greens were kind of rough, [and] the scores were high, but we held our own on a tough-weather day," said Coach Shipman.

Cusato shot a team-best eight-over-par 80 on Saturday. Bloom followed Cusato, shooting an 11-over-par 83.

The golf team has two tournaments this week. The first being the Western New England Tournament on Wednesday, and the second in the Johnson and Whales Invitational this weekend.
