The indoor track teams produced mixed results Saturday at the Bowdoin College Invitational, as the men's team racked up 106 points to post a victory, but the women's team came up short against Bowdoin squad and lost 102-71. Despite the disparate team results, however, members of both squads turned in noteworthy individual efforts. The men's team was paced by captain Mark Bercy '07, who won the 200-meter dash and the long jump. Meanwhile, Ali Sax '09 won all four events she competed in for the women's team, including the 55-meter hurdle, the long-jump, the triple-jump and the 4 x 200 relay. This was the team's third meet of the season, but the competition with team scoring.

"It wasn't a very competitive meet, but it was a good meet to build team morale and confidence," captain Linda Kropp '07 said.

Bercy completed the 200-meter dash in 23.21 seconds and had a long jump of 6.38 meters.

"Mark did great and ran really fast," Matt Jennings '08 said. "He even ran in lane six, which is the hardest lane to run in."

Captain Ralph Chery '07 came in .26 seconds behind Bercy in the 200-meter dash, but the men had a bevy of other individual victories in the competition. Jennings took the one-mile run in 4:27.82 and rookie Keith Thibault '10 earned the first win of his college career in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.36. Joel Sunshine '07 took first in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:40.91, and Shyam Vimal '09 won the triple jump with a distance of 12.72m.

In the 4 x 800 relay, Sunshine, Mike Stone '09, Dan Suher '08 and Jennings combined to win with a time of 2:40.91.

"The times weren't great, but we won, so that's what matters," Jennings said.

On the women's side, Sax won every event she competed in, including the first relay of her collegiate career.

She won the 55-meter hurdles in 9:26, the long jump by a distance of 5 meters and the triple jump in 10.79 meters.

"It was a good starting point for this season," Sax said.

Kropp finished right behind Sax in second, jumping 4.9 meters in the long jump and 10.15 meters in the triple jump. Kropp also won the 55-meter dash in 7.88 seconds.

Sax and Kropp, both highly recruited jumpers out of high school, have pushed each other to greater heights as a tandem for the Judges.

"My only real competition in the jumping events is Linda," Sax said.

"Before my event coach [Mark Reyblatt] said, 'Ali, you push Linda.' I'd much rather Linda be my competition than another team. If I don't do well, I can rely on Linda."

"I think it's absolutely wonderful to have Ali," Kropp said.

"She's someone I respect as a person and as an athlete. She pushes me to become better. Before her I was alone at the jumping pit, now we talk strategy and help each other out in between jumps."

Captain Camille Stevens-Rumann '07 won the mile by three seconds with a time of 5:19.57. Suzanne Bernier '10 won the high jump with a 1.57-meter leap.

In relay competition, Sax, Kropp, Adie Sprague '08, and Sandra Canuto '08 won the 4 x 200m relay in 1:56.65, while captain Alyssa Ross '07, Stevens-Rumann, Beth Pisarik '10, and Emily Terrin '08 won the 4 x 800m relay in 10:10.81.

This was the first meet for the juniors who went abroad last semester. The women's team, especially among its sprinters, did not have much depth without them.

"We're very happy to have the juniors back," Kropp said. "There's definitely room for improvement, but as the season wears on they will definitely contribute a lot of points in upcoming meets."

The Judges run next when they host the Reggie Poyau Memorial Meet Saturday at 10 a.m.
