A student who was severely injured after being cut by glass on Reitman Hall last month has voluntarily withdrawn from the University, his hallmates said. The student's injury, which one person with first-hand knowledge of the Oct. 17 incident attributed to hallucinogenic drugs said last month that the student had consumed mushrooms earlier that night. The incident served as a reminder of Eliezer Schwartz '04, who fell to his death from a third-story window after eating hallucinogenic mushrooms.

His hallmates, who would only speak under the condition of anonymity, said the student is currently receiving psychological counseling.

The student didn't respond by press time to an e-mail sent Monday morning.

"No one suspected him of having problem with drugs or of trying to commit suicide," said one hallmate.

The student suffered severe lacerations to his left breast and armpit after he threw himself toward a glass window adjacent to a bathroom on the first floor of Reitman Hall, witnesses told the Justice last month.

He was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and his condition was stabilized shortly after the injury. He was transported to another facility after three days.

The community advisor on the hall declined to comment, but Director of Residence Life Richard DeCapua confirmed that the student is no longer living on campus. E-mails to the Registrar's office were not returned.

In discussing measures taken by ResLife to combat drug use on campus, DeCapua said, "Our focus has been the mental well-being of students living in North [Quad]. Residence Life's main mission has been meeting with folks who live on that floor, and making sure that they are all going to be okay."

"As bad as the situation was, it was handled very well. And the students on that floor felt very supported," DeCapua said.
