Trailing 2-0 with time running out, the women's soccer team tried to stage a comeback. But one goal and one high shot later, the Judges dropped a 2-1 decision to host Bowdoin College Saturday. With the loss coming after a 2-1 home win over Wellesley College on Tuesday, the Judges are 4-2-1.The comeback was kicked off with nine minutes left in the game, when captain Lauren Gregor '06 kicked a canon from 35 yards out that sailed over the head of Bowdoin senior goalie Anna Shapellin and landed in the upper right corner of the net. Still trailing with less than 30 seconds remaining, Lizzie Bremner '08 gave the Judges one more chance when she crossed the ball in front of Gregor near the box. But Gregor's shot sailed high and the clock ran out.

"We played hard," coach Denise Dallamora said. "They were a good team and they were better than us, but we almost tied it."

It took until the last 14 seconds of the first half for the Polar Bears to score. Rookie forward Alison Chase passed to senior midfielder Danielle Chagnon, who flipped the ball over the head of Brandeis goalie Betsey Medow '08. Bowdoin rookie midfielder Roberta Dennison connected on a long shot off the post in the third quarter to give the Polar Bears a 2-0 lead.

"They were a really tough team, but we played really hard and didn't give up at the end of the game," captain Rachel Koffman '06 said.

Dallamora said the game moved quickly, and that the team needs "to work on switching [fields]."

Melissa Gordon '07 said, "We just need to stay positive and keep playing our game."

Tuesday's 2-1 win against Wellesley College saw a more focused Judges offense. The team came out strong, scoring both its goals in the opening half. Lisa Kaplin, '07 took a shot over the crowded goal box that landed in the upper left corner of the net for the team's first goal. Less than seven minutes later, Bremner passed the ball to Gregor, who deposited the shot over the outstretched hands of Wellesley rookie goalie Samantha Littlejohn.

Wellesley cut the lead in half with less than 18 minutes remaining when sophomore midfielder Alison Carney passed to rookie defender Deirdre Garrahan, who scored from 35 yards out. Wellesley almost came back in the final 10 minutes when Medow fumbled a ball in front of the net, but rookie defender Margot Moinester '08 cleared the ball right before it crossed the line.

Kaplin's goal, her fourth of the season, came days after she was named the UAA women's soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 20. After missing the first two games, Kaplin had her first multi-goal game of the season against Springfield College on Sept. 17.
