Shirley Tempos perform with grace and elegance
The Shirley Tempos, a female a cappella ensemble, and Simple Harmonic Motion of Worcester Polytechnic Institute charmed a small yet rambunctious crowd in the Silver Auditorium last Friday. The Shirley Tempos' spring show, titled "...With a Cherry on Top," featured covers of songs by Bonnie Raitt, Alanis Morissette, Marvin Gaye and Robbie Williams. The Shirley Tempos' graceful and elegant outfits were complemented by the lovely venue, which provided a much needed reprieve from loud, cramped spaces like Cholmondeley's. The girls demonstrated the versatility of a cappella, from classic croons like Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World" to modern hits like Avril Lavigne's "My Happy Ending."
Jess Perelle '07 highlighted the show with her soulful solos in Raitt's "Something to Talk About" and her arrangement of Williams' "Something Beautiful." The seniors in the ensemble gave featured solo performances, too. Sarah Beckwith '05 ended her four years with the group with an enjoyable solo in The Real McCoy's "Another Night." A member of Simple Harmonic Motion provided the male voice in the song, resulting in huge laughs from the audience. Sarah Black '05 closed her last performance with a beautiful solo in Annie Lennox's "Walking on Broken Glass."
Simple Harmonic Motion were superb with a beautiful rendition of Billy Joel's "Lullaby" and an energetic performance of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Their booming voices and powerful stage presence sharply contrasted with the Shirley Tempos' softer repertoire.
The Shirley Tempos' poise and composure created a very professional atmosphere, differing greatly from the usual energetic, bouncy nature of a cappella shows. With only two seniors departing the group and a diverse repertoire of old favorites and contemporary hits, the Shirley Tempos will surely continue to be successful into the future.
