There's a new guy on the grass-roots scene. But while Todd Martin's vying to become the next John Mayer, he falls short in charm and distinctiveness. The Philadelphia native's new album, How Is It That I'm Alone, follows his 2003 demo release, Visions and his live record Live From My Hometown, a product of his growing support group.

Although his album can be lyrically strong-and even poetic at times-Martin's mediocre vocals and muddled melodies may prevent listeners from truly appreciating his sound.

Several songs are particularly weak. In "Mission," Martin sings "And I will leave you alone/ So I will call you on the phone/And ask you out alone/Cause you are so beautiful." Not only are his words devoid of emotional value, but the grating sound of his pleading cry for unrequited love fails to please. Many of the songs sound the same, and Martin even sounds off-pitch and blaring at times.

Martin's album, however, has some saving grace. "Even Worse" is appealing in its powerful projection and catchy acoustics. "She Knows" and "Down the Chart" are strong applications of his abilities. "What You Want" is one of the most pleasing songs on the album in its ability to lull the listener with its soft vocals and fluidity. Martin ends with "My Most Myself," a sorrowful, close to the album.

Martin is honest to listeners with his soulful messages about his views on life and love. Sometimes, all he needs a little more vocal flair to keep the listener interested.

Although he makes a valiant attempt to impress, Martin's album just isn't unique from other artists in his genre, and John Mayer he is not.
